Hi guys! So, today has been an eventful one for me to say the least!

Had a text from a friend who works in a PAH vet center, with a pic attached of a gorgeous leo, saying she'd been found dumped in a car park! Wondered if I might be able to take her in, otherwise it'd be the local RSPCA for her! Well, knowing my local RSPCA and their track record with reptiles, I scoured our garage etc. for equipment and managed to find a 3x1.5 ft viv and a few hides etc. Friend picked up a heat mat for me and bought her over.

So, I've kept Leo's before briefly, and have read the general info etc. so not worried about temps, damp hides etc. but what I am worried about is her weight.
IMO she looks really skinny and I think I need to put her on a serious weight gain diet, but obviously not being that experience I'm not too sure. Please let me know what you think and any advice for what I can feed her to bulk her up!
She also has a few toes covered in old shed but I'm thinking I'll leave her in with the damp hide for now then tomorrow try and gently pries it off with cotton buds?

Also any comments on her current set-up would be appreciated, just chucked in what I have atm and will take a trip to the LRS to get some better bowls etc; just kitchen towel for substrate, heatmat on the left side, damp hide in the middle, and the large hide at the right hand side.

We've named her Layla, haven't decided as of yet whether she's permanent or just fostering, my friend who contacted me is enamored with her, so may end up having her once she's confirmed healthy

The worst part about fostering/rescuing is not knowing anything about the animal such as age, but personally as you dont know how long she's been out in the world id feed her that bit extra, get that tail nice and fat! And see how she does. Loverly name btw :)

Hehe cheers, let my friend name her as she was the middle man :)

According to what I've been told, poor little thing was left in a shoebox in the corner of a car-park, and the woman who found her only did so because she went to move the box rather than run it over to park. Seriously lucky that she made that desicion!!!

So I'm thinking staple of mealies, preferably freshly shed, with some nice waxworm meals? I'll weight and measure her tomorrow, then put the results up. Maybe someone would be able to compare so a similar sized female for me?

I would be posting all of this on the Reptilian forum, but for some reason I can't access the actual forum!!!

They are quite fattening, but vary everything with crickets etc and dust with supplements too. if you arnt using UV bulbs add in D3 every so often.
If her toes are constricted by excess skin from bad sheds try and get that off as soon as you can as to prevent the circulation from the toes cutting off and her toes dying.
But that was a VERY LUCKY escape from being run over, thankfully the woman had common sense to move the box :o.

Luckily I have a Beardie so always have some sort of live food in, unfortunately typically today I only have giant locusts! My friend gave me some sort of liquid feed that they gave her at the vets this morning, so will syringe feed her tonight then get some mealies and waxies tomorrow. Also intend to get some calci+d3 powder, and already have Nutrabol so will dust with that once a week for her vits :)

Fortunately, I feel more than able to handle the situation, having already gone through rehabilitating a rescue snake, is just nice to be able to confirm my info and get advice from people I can trust :)

Poor little mite.
How could anybody be so bl**dy cruel, makes my blood boil.

I keep a little container of calcium powder in out Tinsel's viv all the time.
I also have a small bowl of mealworms in her viv so she can eat whenever she wants.
She has crickets, calci worms, locusts at night and I vary them so she never has the same meal every night.
The crickets and locusts are kept in cricket keepers on a bed of oats and weetabix and gutloaded with fresh fruit and vegetables.

Hope that helps.
Fingers crossed for her, she's a real beauty!

I know she's a little stunner, and such a good girl! Just sat there whilst I managed to get the retained shed off her toes, but unfortuantly upon closer examination, it seems she has lost the ends of several of her toes already, as they are pointy like claws, and once I got the shed off the worst of the toes, it has only a little claw-like point, which I'm assuming is bone :(

She is also holding one of her eyes closed constantly, have seen her open it a few times but generally it is closed, and there is a very slight cloudy mucus on her eyelids, which wipes off with a cotton bud. Thought she might have some retained shed there so gave it a little wipe, but no difference, wondering if it may be infected, but can't open her eye to actually look. Would prefer to avoid a vet trip as so far I have only had to pay out for the heat mat, but obviously will be willing to pay if it needs be!

Just from personal preference id take her too a vet to get a full once over. Check those toes and her eyes.

Poor little gecko...good on you for taking her in, she deserves a nice home, after what she's been through.

Just one thing I'd be a bit careful about - just in case - ( you probably know this already )- if she doesn't put a weight on, have her poop tested for crypto.... leopard geckos can carry it - and I'd just keep a really strict quarantine regime till you know she's fine - just to be on the safe side with having your other reptiles. I don't mean to scare you - it's most likely she'd just been badly neglected - from what you've said and from how she was found, and that she'll put on weight with good feeding. Hope she's ok, she's a lovely girl.

She's in the same room as my snake but I'd never handle between reps without washing my hands anyway :) She was checked over by the vets at PAH this morning and they said as far as they can see she is fine, no mites or anything.
She's also already had a little poop, and off to try and syringe feed her a little bit before it gets too late, just wanna get some nourishment in her!

Try Morio worms too. My leo was an abandoned pet, was skinnier than Layla is now, after a year (she stopped eating anything more than 1 morio a week sept-feb) just putting weight on now! I tried anything and everything and it's now paying off! I don't feed crickets and rarely locusts because she ignores them, so she just has mealies morios and waxworms. Dubia roaches are apparently really good for them too with better goodness ratios than others.

My Kira won't settle if her temps drop below 31degrees. She stops eating until its sorted!

Leave plain calcium in at all times and add multivitamins w d3 to her food everytime until she starts putting on weight. Keep her on the kitchen roll until she has shed a couple of times and ya know shes okay, but dont use sand/loose substrate as it is risky for a few reasons, main one being impaction. Lino or tiles work well :)

Leave her to settle for a few days so she can adapt to her new surroundings.

Keep a check on her eye, yiu can flush it with saline solution but research it first, I have never had to use it and hopefully never have to!

My daughters leo loves dubia roaches more than anything else, they are definitely worth trying.

Good luck with her.
