Hi all, so I'm thinking of getting a hognose snake at some point, probably in about a year when I've moved Lovecraft up to a bigger viv, and I was just wondering if anyone who has purchased one in the past could tell me roughly how much I could expect to pay? I have done a little research on the web and they seem to be quite expensive, but those were all breeders' websites and I was thinking the prices might be different elsewhere.
So basically I'd like to know where the cheapest (reputable) place to get them would be (I'm guessing shows?) and how much they would likely be. I'll probably get one no matter the price (within reason) but it would be good to know what to expect for the sake of saving up. I'm not at all fussy about morphs; a perfectly ordinary normal would be fine with me, and though I would prefer a hatchling an adolescent or adult would also be fine. Also don't care about sex, not that I suppose it makes any difference to the price.
Thanks in advance :) |

I got my male 'green phase' hatchling last June from Doncaster show, for £50. Im not really sure how much they are on average, I just wanted a Hoggie so bought the cheapest I could find. Quite a few people on here with or getting Hoggies now so im sure you will have various prices thrown at ya. |

Our normal male was £65 from a shop but obviously you'd expect to pay less from a breeder or at a show (there are some up on the 'dark side' for £35 currently for example). This is the right time of year to be looking, there are loads of hatchies starting to become available now. As soon as you look at any morph at all the females are more expensive and the prices start rising significantly.... eg we are hoping to get an albino female, and the rate from a breeder seems to be about £100 for males and £150 for females. I would LOVE an albino superconda... but don't have £2500 to spare lol! Also the axanthic are lovely - they may come down to our price range in a few years time though :P |

Ah, thanks a bunch for the replies, that's much better than I was expecting, one of the sites I was looking at belonged to an American breeder and their prices ranged from $800-$2,000 for what I gather to be fairly common morphs :o Maybe they're more expensive in the States for some reason?
Anyway, the prices you guys have given are much more manageable :D
By the way Smart Bunny, what is the 'dark side' thing you mentioned? I Googled it but couldn't find anything. |

She is referring to that which must not be named, which I am going to name. RFUK another reptile forum. A dark and evil place, people are much nicer here and don't argue for pages and pages on a topic. I only use it for specific pieces of information otherwise I just get lost. |

The price varies depending on the morph. A normal will cost between £30-60 from a breeder. If you want an albino they will be around £100-150. The real fancy new morphs go up into the £1000'S
The 'dark side' is another forum http://www.reptileforums.co.uk/
Edit to add...sorry mods if I'm not meant to add a link to the dark side! |

Ah, I see, thanks lol :) I have come across RFUK before when googling advice but I haven't wanted to join, mostly because the only exotic pets I have/want (at least for the moment) are smallish snakes and that forum seems to be about everything, with the snake section being relatively small and having a lot of information on the big pythons and boas, whereas this site is mostly just corns. Not trying to bash the other site, it just doesn't suit my needs :) |

The thing with hoggie morphs is that none of them are all that 'common' yet, the only common one really being albino, and that's still pricy compared to an anery or amel corn for example.
Given a few more years I expect anacondas (I want lol) will be much much cheaper than they are currently, but if you happen to look at toffeebelly or axanthic or pink pastel at the moment, you will balk at the price lol
I wasn't kidding when I said an albino superconda female would be up for £2500 currently, the males are up for £2200. (That is extreme red ones to be fair - just jaw-droppingly stunning) |

Ah, that would explain some of the high prices then. I don't have a problem with people charging a lot for a rare morph they've put a lot of work into breeding though, even if it does mean that some of the more unusual morphs are inaccessible to people without mountains of cash :P
Like I said though, I'm not fussy about morphs, a normal is fine for me, though if I could choose I would have a leucistic... :) |

The nearest place to me in Manchester (viperandvine) sell them from £99 to £375, but they were a little cheaper at the show/breeders meetings. Keep a look out on gumtree, pets4homes and preloved when you are ready, sometimes they pop up. |

If you're only after a normal a shop is the better option. As most normals in shops are cheap now :)albinos have come down in price alot to.
morphs on the other hand, can be very expensive from the shops.hundreds of pounds over what a breeder is selling them for.if you can find a shop selling more then just normals or albinos.
