I av a 9 half months old carolina corn. Had it 8 months. 1st timer with snakes so made sure I did my research on viv equipment food handling sexing, pretty much everything. Mostly looking on here. It's been a brilliant snake always eats sheds very well (kept all shedded skin to compare growth) handles brilliantly my youngest son loves holding it. Usually find him under a little log tunnel but also likes climbing up glass using the lock to get higher. Even got t watch it drink which I believe is a rare sight. Everything was fine until I looked in this afternoon. It was out next to water bowl but not moving. If it's not curled under the log its wandering. I got him out and knew summit was up cos it dint flinch when I picked him up. He hardly moved n if it did it seemed an effort and only moved bout half a cm. After holding a while it opened its mouth wide as if to strike but had no energy to move far. I put him back in viv so he cud calm down n it started to have a fit, mouth still open, even rolling over. He lay still for ages so placed him under log for a bit, tried pinky, no go, it wud look dead for a while then move very slowly a short distance. I thought it had properly died as I noticed him fully on his back and mouth open. Took kids to bed looked in again and he was moving a little. It's very weird I can't figure out y he is doing it. Has fresh water every morning was due a pinky tomorrow night. Can someone please help

would recommend going to the vets asap, however fits and gaping mouth isnt usually a good sign in all honesty and is possibly down to neurological issue.

what temps do you have the snake at?

Been searching n it seems its neurological. Wot effect do mites have. I av never noticed any before but will av a proper look. Cud they make it behave wierd. If so I hope it's mites (never Thort I'd say that) over something neurological

A mite infestation would have to be absolutely massive and have been that way for a long time to have any real damaging effect to your snake and you would have noticed this if you have been looking at your snake (which you have) so it won't be them. A trip to the vets is the only option for you now and you need to get it there quickly by the sounds of it. What substrate have you got him on?

Welcome to the forum, I hope he pulls through, though I must say it doesn't sound good.
Just a thought ( probably no use )- snakes can be quite sensitive to chemicals - did anything get near his viv - cleaning products not meant for snakes, too much air freshener, - just shots in the dark...

Taking him to a reptile vet is the only option, but if it is a neurological issue, there probably isn't much that can be done... fingers crossed.

Sometimes these things just sadly happen :( With someone as you described, I doubt it was anything you did wrong or could have done.

A very special super, duper thanks for K :3

I'm so sorry Simon. From what you've described I don't think there is anything you could have done, even if you had got him to a vet. Sounds silly but it seems very like what happened to my dog a number of years ago, some sort of stroke that led to his heart failing. At least it was quick and you and your son didn't have to witness him suffering.

Xxx

Oh dear I'm so sorry... It sounds like he had an underlying neurological problem or possibly an internal organ problem. He could have had a problem with his heart or his lungs. The gaping mouth suggests to me that he was struggling to breath which leads me to think maybe he had a lung problem. It doesn't sound there was anything anyone could have done, even if you had got him to a vets and described his behavior I think they would have decided to put him to sleep to prevent suffering unfortunately. Once again, so sorry to here he didn't make it
Please don't let this put you off getting another one in the future if you choose to. There are plenty of people on here who can tell you that corns are usually tough things and survive a number of things. My pair before I got them were both kept wrong. My female(Sakana) was kept in a viv with an unguarded light bulb and no stat on her heat mat and she's 7 years old now My male(Cereus) was kept the same way but with a tiny waterbowl(Exo Terra Small Water Dish) and he's 5 years old on the 8th October this year See corns can survive so much, my female was also cohabited with her clutch mate from being newborn till last year when I got her. From what you've described, your set-up was perfect so I believe it was nothing you did and more something up with the snake itself.

Upload the photo you want to Photobucket then when it's uploaded use the IMG code on the right hand side of the picture. Go into your profile using the actual "Profile" link at the top and then paste the IMG code into the Signature bit I can do you a picture tutorial if you'd like?
