Hi all, Coal here, I'm new to the forum and pretty new to reptile keeping in general; just got my first corn last week c:
He's a very handsome amel male with a lovely temperament; he's never so much as rattled his tail or hissed (do corn snakes hiss...?), let alone bitten, and although he can be quite wriggly he seems to quite enjoy being handled.
The only pic I have of him is quite large so in the interests of not stretching the board....(Kellog decides that Lovecraft deserves a big pic because he's so lovely)
I just have one question at the mo'; he's about 11 months old right now and is about 50cm long, and I was wondering whether this is normal as it seems a little small to me. I'm not worried; he seems to be in great health, I'm just curious to here others' opinions c:
Thanks and hi again <3

Hello and welcome!
Lovecraft is a lovely looking little one He looks plenty big enough to me, but as long as he is eating/pooping/behaving normally, I wouldnt worry about size - they all grow at different rates |

Hiya and welcome :D Looks a good shape to me - what size mice are you feeding him? If he's nearing a size increase then he will have a growth spurt when you move him up ;) |

Thanks for all the welcomes guys :D
He seems healthy enough, feeding readily and pooping normally. Before I got him he was being fed one fluff a week (which didn't seem like a lot to me...) and in the interests of helping him settle in I carried that on with his first meal with me, but I think I might start giving him smalls, and if he won't take them, two fluffs instead... does that sound like a good idea to you guys?
@ ScaryVonHayletstine: Hmm, that does make me think Lovecraft is a little small for his age... hopefully his growth will speed up and if not, I guess I'll just have a small snake; so long as he's happy and healthy I don't mind c: |

Sounds like a good idea to me. My intention wasnt to worry you of his size, maybe mine are just stupidly large :o aha. But like you said he's very healthy so im sure he's fine ^^ |

:D I'm glad you like his name!
I was a little surprised at how many blank looks I got when I told people what he was called... I thought H.P. Lovecraft was pretty well-known but apparently not, at least around me. I've always loved the mythos but have only just started reading the Necronomicon for myself c:
And yeah, I'm not overly worried, I'll just make sure to keep measuring his growth to see how he's doing c: |

The shop I get my mice from sells 'mini-mice' or hoppers which are between fuzzies and smalls which is quite handy. My first corn is fairly large, and by just over 12 months was on smalls, but my second corn has always been thinner, and was on large fuzzies at 11 months, moving up to the mini-mice at 13 months and finally up to smalls at 14 months. To be honest your snake doesn't look as thin as her (she's always been very slender) so may well be ready for smalls now - as long as they are no wider than 1.5 times the width of the widest part of the head he'll be fine. If you are concerned about the width then you could give double fluff feeds, although that is actually likely to be a larger meal than one small :)
Off to google necronomicon now :P*>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> |

Hmm, hoppers do sound very handy! Unfortunately the only place near me that sells frozen mice does not do them, just fluffs and then straight on up to smalls :(
It is more the width I'm worried about than the size of the meal; I've heard about the 1.5x rule before and just looking by eye I would say he'd be fine, but I'll do some measurements beforehand just to be certain. If he won't take a small/if it's too big I'll probably alternate double fluff and single fluff meals for a while... does that seem sensible? (Need all the advice I can get :P ) |

id say if your going to give double meals then carry it on as long as your snake agrees. |

Glad you've joined us Coal. Lovecraft is lovely . Please don't worry about whether he is big enough compared to others his size. If you look in How big should my snake be? you'll see how much snakes even from the same clutch, who are fed exactly the same, can differ. As has been said, as long as he's doing everything he should then he's fine .
As far as feeding is concerned, if you are concerned that small mice are too wide for him then it's fine to do some feeds of double fluffs. I know it can seem daunting when you compare the size of their head with what you need them to eat, but its amazing how they can stretch their jaws and swallow prey that just seems too big . There is more information on knowing when to move up to the next size, etc in A VERY ROUGH guide to feeding . There are also other good threads in that section to help you make sure you've got his set-up right with its heatmat, thermostat and digital thermometer, and about shedding, handling, etc.
If you can't find what you want to know using the search option, then please don't hesitate to ask. We don't bite....much .
And a word of warning.....keeping corns is addictive, Lovecraft won't be your one and only !!
Xxx
