Some are lovely, some are monsters haha!

One of mine is absolutely lovely; super easy to handle and doesnt seem fussed by anything
Another is a psycho and will chomp and musk at anything
Then one doesnt care about people but bites herself...

the truth about kingsnakes will never be known ;) they are too unpredictable.

Like all snakes they can turn and be aggressive at any time and when young they do tend to be like that, which is where the reputation comes from. This appplies not only to kings but to all snakes, as every snake has the potential to be a bitey feisty nasty wee sod :D

Our king is a little beggar, she'll musk all day and night but has never struck, probably because we don;t give her the opportunity. It helps to be confident. She is still very flighty, but she's only a young'un.

Think Gmac has summed it up well. Our king at work is usually lovely only issue we have with him is during breeding season rather than doing sexy dancing and looking for a girl he is more prone to feeding frenzy's and has a habit of attacking himself, although so far he hasn't actually bitten anyone. I think he's a fab snake though and if he ever needs a home he is coming to me!!

Musk is stinky liquid type stuff that they produce and then proceed to smear and flick from their vents all over their unsuspecting owners/potential predators

I don't have any problems, my king is better behaved than the corns. He's so soft, I can stroke his head and is just the calmest snake I have. He does seem to roll in musk though :s sometimes his poo. :/ He has bitten himself more than me though :p

If your thinking about getting one, don't get one hoping you will get a cuddly one. Get a king and expect it to be a king. Some get them thinking that they may calm down and it seems like the truth is, some never do.

A very special super, duper thanks for K :3

Thought I'd add my oppinion.

I have a Corn and Cali King. Corns are much more placid to handle in comparison to my cali, in my experience of owning the both. My cali king was a nightmare on her first month or so home. She would musk me any given oppurtunity, her vivarium would stink even after loads of deep cleans. So much of my time was spent cleaning (Although I would say I'm obessesive compulsive). She even rattled her tail everytime someone went passed. I don't think the breader handled her much, but I never gave up

Now she is much more placid, allows me to handle her. But will show when she's had enough. She is very tempermental compared to my Corn (who is happy for handling anytime). Tbh if you do get a cali, consider whether you would be happy to risk being bitten and musked on lol. As IMO it's only a matter of time, during the stages of when you both meet eachother and keeping a cali. She has not tagged me yet, but i'm sure she will take the chance too if given the oppurtunity.

I'd never change owning her though she is a beautiful snake and I love the fact that she will show how she feels. In some strange way you become used to reading signals and if you dont you'll learn fast lol.

Goodluck, don't be put off by being tagged or musked though. If you think you can deal with this happening then you should go for it.
