Afternoon all, well I needed to get some mice for the snakies so I popped into the reptile place I use and was amazed to find he is now stocking and selling venomous snakes and reptiles I only saw 1 hela monster and he is beautiful but there are various rattlesnakes of different varieties and sizes and the same with cobras 1 very pretty young male albino cobra (Naja kaouthia) which was extremely stroppy and spent most of the time displaying and striking the glass. It was really interesting to see them all but I certainly wouldn't want to be bringing any of them home. |

cant agree with you more!when my eldest was a baby we shared our home with an albino python;until I realised he was a VERY large predator with a VERY small brain and my baby was about the size of the piglets we were feeding him . He went to the Isle Of Wight Zoo-Jack Corny was pleased with him,and he had loads of space and lots of visiting children to think about eating |

That must have been a surprise Jane, not what you expect when you walk into your local reptile place. I've had this conversation with my OH, about keeping dangerous snakes. I just don't see why anyone would. I know some of them are beautiful, but there are just as beautiful and more beautiful non-venomous snakes.....and the big thing for me, you can't handle them. I do understand that there is a 'danger' factor in keeping them, but that's not for me!

My local pet shop has had venomous snakes for a while now, properly locked in their vivs, of course. They are beautiful, but most definitely not something I'd be buying or even consider keeping. They are fascinating to watch, though. |

Not that I am planning on it but do you need a licence for a venemous snake the same way you would for a wolf? |

Yes Charles and it does state on all the vivs with venomous reptiles in that they will only be sold to license holders but I was surprised at how reasonable they were at £299 for an adult considering the fact that they are dangerous animals mind I suppose that's because they are covered by license, the only one that I did think was expensive was the Hela Monster at £1500.00. |

Yes, I thinks it's a DEFRA license you need to keep venomous species. Although there are some stringent rules to follow. They will send a specialist to your property to ensure that you are suitable. The snake has to be kept in a secure room (with locked door) inside a locked vivarium. In most pet shops they are either double viv'd or in a locked viv in a room with a locked door. Was considering venturing to keeping venomous species, although its to dangerous with a child.
Also if you do get a venomous snake, check what hospital nearest to you stores anti venom for your species. Tbh there are plenty of beautiful snakes that do not pose such a danger in keeping. So id steer away from keeping venomous species

I thought they'd be much more expensive too! I've seen rattlesnakes for £80 - albinos for only £100 |

To own any venomous animal you need a Dangerous Wild Animal License. I'm guessing by Hela Monster you mean Gila Monster? Also, was it really a Gila or was it a Beaded?
All in all, Venomous Snakes can be very inexpensive to buy which can be surprising but if you think about it. You do need a special Dangerous Wild Animal Licence for them which costs and has to be updated every year I think it is. |

Don't worry Welshlamb definitely not for me I won't even be going to buy anything on a Saturday as that's feeding day which means the viv doors will be open at some point so I'll stick to Sundays when they're all sleeping their dinner off.
He doesn't keep his in a locked room they're just on open display mixed in amongst all the other reptiles, he keeps all his vivs locked as he's had stock stolen in the past.
AcidicAngel yes she most definitely said gila monster and I've just looked on the web and it is identical to the reticulated gila monster the only difference I could see is he's black and red not black and orange.

we saw some albino cobras in a shop we when into and they were stunning, o/h wasn't best impressed when asked his thoughts on me getting my DWA licence lol! Can't remember all the in's and out's but you need to show you are capable and have suitable facilities to house the species you want to get your DWA and cost of licence varies from county to county. Not sure how it goes with pets shops as some pieces of legislation don't apply as the pet shop licensing and regulations cover it.
Edit to ask: where is this shop? want to have a nosy |

Black and Red means Gila Monster They vary from Orange-Red. Black and Yellow would have meant Beaded Lizard which is another venomous lizard. The only two venomous lizards, the Beaded Lizard and the Gila Monster. There's a shop just outside Liverpool called Repti-lisious which has a shop pet - An Albino Diamond Back Rattlesnake. |
