Not sure whether I'm hearing things. But earlier I was spot cleaning the vivarium and Belle shot out of her hide. She went along the back and her tail was rattling just like a rattle snake. She did it again and went back to her hide. Not feeling very confident on handling after this.
Although I think im over watching the tail now and can not tell whether its just moving quick along the beech chips or whether its rattling again.
What is your advice on this? Should I avoid handling, as I've not had her long and handling her has been minimal, she's very shy |

It is her who is not feeling confident. You might have startled her and is just reacting normally to getting a fright. Carry on with the handling, slow and gentle to get acquainted. Try scrabbling in the substrate to give a bit of warning that you are in the area. She 'should' take a peek out to investigate.
I have a severely broken Florida called Rattler. Going on for 8 months of patience and he now comes to my hand out of curiosity. He's still a bit nervous and rattles but at least doesn't bolt for the hide if I look at him sideways. |

Jake (corn snake) often rattles as well. It's hard not to be amused at the fact that he still thinks he can convince me he's a rattlesnake :P |

Yeah I got a good old rattle off Corno when I went to get her out last night - as usual with her it's her way of pointing out to me that she wants to be left alone because she's just starting to go into blue... AGAIN!! She was fine once I got her out though, and very keen to eat her mouse, actually struck it for once :O
It may well just be that you startled her, or it may be a little signal of going into blue or something - do you know if she is due a shed? |

Hey all. Thanks for the info. I left her alone, but will go for a handle session soon. No idea if she's due for a shed as have only had her just over a week. She pops out of her hide now and again but shoots off.
I put the rattling down to me startling her, but I'm feeling optimistic |

Update:
Just handled Belle, she was fine. Although as soon as back in her vivarium, the tail rattling started up again. She's such a funny snake. |
