I have recently brought my corn snake home who is 6 months old. On his data sheet they had been feeding him every Tuesday. He is currently on pinkies. I was looking on some other website and it says people should feed a baby corn every 3 to 5 days. Is this true could anyone help me please.

I feed my snakes every 5 days when they are on pinkies I think every 3 days is too often as they are then constantly digesting which isn't good for them.

I guess it is a movable feast!constantly eating is obviously not good-I think its most important that they have fresh water every day.Mine drink immediately that I change the water, its the only time they ever seem to drink.
Our first corns were starved babies.Once they started drinking, eating on a regular basis soon followed. Now they are happy friendly calm snakes.
Try not to worry-I know its silly to say that-but snakes work on a different pace than other pets (bunnies/gerbils etc)and often missing a meal is not a big deal-it can seem like forever when its your first and only snake though

Welcome to corn keeping Kevin . Have you let your corn have a week to get over the stress of the move and settle into his new home, so no handling or feeding? If you haven't, it may be a good idea to do it....some corns settle quickly without problems but others need time to adjust and it's always better to be safe than sorry.

As far as his feeding is concerned I agree with Moppet about feeding every 3 days being too often. The snake needs time to digest its food and some take longer than others. It also means you don't have much time to handle, after leaving him for 48hrs after a feed . The 'norm' for snakes on pinkies is every 5 days. Have a look at A VERY ROUGH guide to feeding . It will give you some hints about feeding, but remember that it is only a rough guide.

You say he is on pinkies....is he being fed one or two each feed? You probably won't know this yet, but is there a 'bump' after he's eaten? Do you know how much he weighs? It's always a good idea to keep records of your snake.....weight, dates of feeding and what you feed him, dates he sheds, any health issues, etc.

I do hope that's been of some help. Please don't hesitate to ask questions. The only silly question is the one you don't ask !

I brought him home on the 8th of april. I left him alone for 48 hours to let him settle into his new faun. I got him out during the day on the 10th for a little while, then on the night time I gave him fresh water and offered him a pinkie. He did not take it off me but I left it inside his faun. I was watching him on my video monitor and watched him eat it 15 mins later. I left him for a further 48 hours before handling. I handle him each day for about 10 mins. Where I bought him from they said that he had been eating fuzzy mice the lost three feeds but they advised me to keep him on the pinkie's for a further month as they thought the fuzzy's were a little big for him. I fed him last night I dangled a pinkie in front of him and he took it straight away, I videoed him and it only took him literally 2 minutes to eat. I am going to weigh him tomorrow night after the 48 hours have passed for digesting. He is a real friendly snake to handle and loves to explore. He only ever seems to come out if I pick him out of his hide or if he is under the kitchen paper which seems to be his favourite place. Also he only ever seems to have a drink when I put him fresh in.

He sounds like a lovely corn Kevin . I can't wait to see pics of him....hint hint .

Don't worry about the fact that he only comes out if you pick him up. Some corns will actively want to come out, others don't. I rarely see mine, as they are in their hides all the time, except for when I get them out to handle and feed....except for this time of the year when Kellog is thinking more of females than food ! Also don't worry too much about him only drinking when you put fresh in....you don't know what he's up to when you're fast asleep.

Must have been wonderful when he took that pinkie off you . When he has eaten it was there any sign of a bump? I'm wondering whether he could move up to 2 pinkies, before doing the jump to fuzzies.

you could see the pinkie is his neck after he ate it but as it was moving down it was only just noticeable. After he ate it he came back out as if he was looking for more. I will get some picture uploaded tomorrow. I will also weigh him tomorrow aswell as I was looking on the feeding guide and it says around 16 grams feed them 2 pinkies. He was 10 grams when I bought him it said on his data sheet.

Also people say that you can feed the snake inside of his faun or put him in a separate tank. If I did feed him in a different tank how would I get back into his home as I thought they could not be handled after a feed.

They are fine to be handled to put back in their viv or you can just tilt the feeding tub inside and the will slither out x

It does sound as though he could either have double pinkies or move up to fuzzies, as there was barely a noticeable bump once he'd eaten. Don't be led too much by the feeding guide....it is just that, a guide. It can give you a rough idea about feeding, but much of it depends on the snake itself and what you want to do.

If you look on that thread you'll see a section on 'Where to feed your snake'. That tells you how you can feed him outside of his faun and move him back, as Georgina has explained.

I weighed him tonight and he is 22 grams. I was surprised, on his next feed I will try him with my last two pinkies and see how he gets on. It was really funny I changed his paper sheets and gave him fresh water. He then lifted his tail end up in the air and dropped his load. I thought it was quite clever him lifting up his tail then when he finished he moved off with his tail still pointed in the air. So I now know a good indication for next time when he is going to go. I still haven't measured him yet but I will get onto that. My partner does't mind touch him when I have a hold of him but she is still bringing herself around to actually holding him. We are getting their though.

You can get a rough idea of length from his shed, you just have to be aware that the skin stretches so you have to take off about 10%, I think it is. You can use the Snake Measurer and this thread shows you the best ways to use it . There are some other ways to Measure your snake here. To be honest the easiest way is probably the string method....just hold a piece of string starting at his nose and let him move through your hands, running the string along his body as you do. It's not easy .

That's a great weight gain since you bought him. Shows how well you're doing . It definitely sounds as though he's ready for 2 pinkies and it probably won't be long before he can move up to fuzzies .

I did smile about him making a mess as soon as you'd cleaned him out . It's good you're picking up on the signs of him wanting to poo, because he'll do the same thing when you're handling him....go still, then lift his tail, hopefully giving you enough time to reach for some kitchen roll to 'catch' it before it arrives .

I'm glad you're partner is beginning to touch him while you hold him. It is a slow process with people who are scared of snakes, but your partner will get there....just no pressure!

I am going to give him to pinkie's a bit later on. See how he gets on. Shall I wait a little bit after he has ate the first one then give him the second?
