Oscar must be coming up for 4 now, i have had him since September 2012. He shed when i just got him (2nd week in September 2012) and again at the end of February. So around 5-6months apart. However, on Sunday (4weeks after his last shed) he shed AGAIN!!
Any ideas why this may be? I had a check over him and there are no injuries that i can see, which i've heard may bring on a shed. Not sure what else it could be. Anybody else had this? |

Could be due to injury that's now cleared up. Have you upped food size or reduced the time between feeding? |

Yeah maybe that is what has happened. He has been doing alot of nose rubbing on the glass recently trying to find ladies methinks, maybe there was some damage to his nose? Although i have been keeping an eye on it and never noticed any changes.
No, in fact the shop i get my mice from gave me a smaller size than usual, so his last feed was 2 small mice and will be doing that once a week until i have ran out of them - he is usually on 1 large mouse every 2 weeks.
I'll check him over again tonight even more thoroughly. Hope all is ok with him! |

My boy Plissken done himself a quite big nose rub injury a couple of years ago during the breeding season, and he shed every 3-4 weeks until it was healed.
In more normal times, he sheds every 4-6 months... |

Perhaps there was a little damage on his nose that he was shedding to heal. I would keep a close eye on him and see what happens. I hope everything is okay |

I'm sure everything is fine. Sometimes they just shed for no apparent reason when you're not expecting it. It's just done to confuse and bother owners!! |

Thanks for putting my mind at rest - checked him over again lastnight and no signs of injury, unless maybe he had a bit of a sore nose and the shed has helped that!
Will keep an eye on him anyway.
Also, i must have missed him shedding my about 2mins, gutted! Fresh shed feels different from one that's been there for an hour or two don't you think? Less....crispy haha! |

I have a 4 year old male thats just done the same. He shed on 01/03 and has eaten twice since then, gone mad looking for a female, he loved coming out and roaming around the living room, now is off his food and always in his hide. He's about ready to shed again, his eyes are clearing after being blue, he's still not eating and doesn't want to come out. There are no visable injuries so I guess there is no reason for it. |

Well today he shed, almost a full piece! I'm always amazed when it happens, he looks lovely and shiny now. He's been a lot more active as well, trying to get out again! I may try a feed later, it's been 21 days since he last accepted a rat so fingers crossed. |

So glad that he's shed Lee . Good luck with him eating....I think you're going to need it from the sounds of the way he's still behaving ! One of mine hadn't eaten for 20 days, but I tried him with a small mouse instead of the large he usually has and he took it....then refused it the next time I tried! Has he lost much weight over this period?

I tried a feed last night but he wasn't interested, he just wanted to have a slither around the living room. I even put him in an RUB with the small rat for an hour, when I opened it he was curled up asleep. He sniffs the rat but that's all, absolutely no interest in eating it. According to his records he ate 4 days after his last shed, then 6 days after that so I'll try that again and hopefully he won't go into another shed again at the end of April. Mice are a no no, he just won't eat them so it's weaner rats for now, wasted 4 this month! Poor things died for nothing! I don't think he's lost any weight, he's still a chunky snake and I'm not worried about his weight...yet! |

If he's still roaming the viv and trying to escape then I'm not surprised he refused. Kellog has gone for 13 weeks before and I know other owners whose snake have gone more than 4 months. It is a good idea to keep an eye on his weight, so you're aware of what he's losing. Also, if he's on weaner rats there is the chance of him getting overweight. They can be fed to corns, but need a longer gap between feeds. I THINK weaner rats are equivalent to x-large/jumbo mice, which you would normally feed fortnightly. How old is he?

He's 4 years old and 4ft 8 long, thicker than a toilet roll tube, but not fat as far as I can tell. He has no wrinkles or 'love handles' just a sturdy body and you can see his muscle tone is good. I'm not worried about him at the moment, I'm more worried about the female, it's been 7 weeks since she ate and she's gravid, she was when I got her. That won't be helping Drago either, smelling a female in the house. |

Not being funny, but thicker than a toilet roll does sound huge for a corn, is he round or 'loaf shaped' - could you post a pic? |

He's loaf shaped, I'll post a pic when I can in a separate thread. I will have to open a photo account of some sort first. |

Have had a look at the pics Lee....and as Moppet said, its difficult to tell with him curled up. I'd certainly be interested to know what weight he is. I know all snakes are different, but for a rough comparison Kellog is just under 5' and is just under 800g. He's 8yrs old now, so not growing any more, and I don't want him getting much over the 800g mark. He's on a large mouse every fortnight....when he eats .
You might find Is your snake a fatty? interesting reading. And I'm not saying that Oscar is a fatty !!

No probs Lee, sounds exactly like Oscar, apart from he hasn't refused food yet. Never had him refuse food, he's just a big mouse bucket haha! Hope he eats for you soon.
Haha Kellog, he isn't anymore but was a bit on the chubby side when i got him hehe. He's much better now he's on a large every 2 weeks instead of a jumbo every week |

Got totally confused Alannah ...was referring to Lee's snake, not Oscar! Had forgotten that your thread had been hijacked .
A jumbo a week , wow!! I used to have Kellog on a jumbo every fortnight, but have dropped him down to larges instead....when he eats . Oscar is so lucky he came to someone who knew how to look after him . I dread to think what he'd be like if he'd stayed on that feeding regime .
