So I have had Rubi a year and 2 months. She is just about hitting the three yr old mark.

May last year she laid some eggs, but as she was my only snake we figured she'd been bred and dumped at a pet shop, unknowingly we bought her.
But now, she's had a sudden weight gain, a right attitude problem and constantly on the move, just like last year. She hasn't been with anything at all since we had her, but she had obviously retained sperm to lay last time, surely it can't be happening again?

I have put a 'lay box' in just in case, and immediately she got in, pushed her face all around the edges and the lid and now curled up in the corner of it. She's been in there 30 minutes now, and since she last shed this is the longest I've seen her still.

It could be happening again.
They can retain sperm for future clutches.
The quality of the sperm can decrease over time so maybe any eggs she might have wouldn't be fertile.

As horrible as it sounds, I really don't care about the eggs, if fertile I would care for them, but my concern is her, she's not even 200g yet so if this is happening again it will take it out of her, and she is my priority :/

The thing that springs to my mind also is parthenogenesis - virgin births. Although rare we are finding more and more examples, particularly in reptiles.

There have been several members on here whose snakes have laid slugs despite never having met a male. Sounds like your snake could be one of those who just produces eggs each year no matter what. Must be very worrying for you at her low weight though, I hope she is OK.

It is worrying for sure! I just feel bad for her, the previous owner is lucky I don't know them lol, just for their sheer stupidity! Fingers crossed she's okay anyway, since putting the lay box in she's really chilled out, in fact I've not seen her move, mum saw her move from the lay box other warmest hide and that's where she's been since. Big difference from hearing her 24/7 trying to get out/ on an endless search mission!

At least this time I am prepared for anything that happens, unlike last year!

I'm so sorry to hear what you're going through Serena . I'm one of those people that smart bunny mentioned, who has been through what you have. I took on a snake that had been mistreated and was underweight. We had it probed and were told it was a boy. I slowly fed 'him' up and 'he' then started doing the normal breeding season behaviour, just as my other male was, and went off 'his' food. 'He' finally settled down and I thought 'Great, 'he' needs to eat and hopefully 'he' will now'. Went to get 'him' out of the cool hide and discovered 12 slugs !! So 'he' was definitely a she!!

She had been housed with another snake about a year previously, that had died, so I don't know whether it was retained sperm and the eggs didn't develop properly because she was not healthy enough, or whether she just laid slugs, which does happen. But in that one act she lost half her body weight . From having been a great strike feeder it became a battle to get her to eat and she began regurging her meals. I had to take her back to the smalls and then increase slowly, by grams rather than food size. That was 2yrs ago this April and she still hasn't reached the weight she was originally, although she is nearly there. I dread it happening again .

You have been through this before and, as you've said, are more prepared for what happens. And you also know you can deal with it and support her through it. I had amazing help and support from some of the forum members, I don't know what I'd have done without them.

Please let us know how she gets on.

I had a virgin female lay 9 slugs last year when she weighed around 150g. She was fine after a few good feeds and some TLC. It has possibly stunted her growth a little, which stands out when you compare her to others from the same year, but aside from being a wee bit small she still seems in fine health.

Best of luck x

I am also one of the members that has had a virgin snake lay eggs. She was 6-7 years old and suddenly layed. Unfortunately we did not have a happy out come and Sindy was put to sleep due to major prolapsing after an egg became stuck. Make sure you keep the lay box and keep a close eye on her. Good Luck, hope it all turns out well for you and Rubi.

I am also a member of the virgin snake club. One of my girls has layed infertile clutches for the last 4 years, each time with progressively worse outcomes. The first year was before I got her when she apparently layed around 8 infertile eggs. The first year I had her she laid 13 infertile eggs but took over 2 weeks to pass them all. Last year she produced over 20 but retained 2 and had to have surgery to remove them. She had most of her reproductive system removed so we were hoping that would be the end of it but a couple of weeks ago she surprised me with another egg. She ended up back at the vets again this week where she underwent surgery again and although she survived the surgery she didn't make it through the night. I'm gutted and just so upset that she has died from something we had no control over.
Just keep an eye on her hun. If my memory serves me right, fertile eggs are supposed to be easier to pass than infertile ones so hopefully it will be retained sperm. Fingers crossed for you and Rubi. Keep us posted

Thank you, I couldn't imagine going through what you did, I'm sorry :( she seems to have calmed down a little bit, still missioning all day and night, and then stopping once she's been fed. It looks like she's about to shed soon as she's starting to look 'dirty' (lol, she's a normal and gets dark stripes when she's due) and still likes the 'lay box'. The only thing that hasn't changed is her appetite, she's still munching away like there's no tomorrow, whereas last year she stopped eating for weeks and was only convinced once to take a rat pup!

Can happen. Char seems to lay slugs every year and now her baby has started doing it too after never being with a male. Best of luck to you though.

Oh kdLang , I'm so sorry. It's so frustrating, and scary, knowing that each year your snake might go through this and their is absolutely nothing you can do about it. And it's made so much worse when something happens like you've experienced. You may not have been able to stop it happening but you did everything you could for her....you know that.

Since I posted Silvi laid 9 slugs, last Sunday. This time they were all laid in one go. She lost 50g in 4 days . She's spent the week 'blue', she seems to do things the wrong way round! She shed early hours of this morning, all in bits when she has always shed full. Am going to try to feed her in the morning.

One thing I will say is that at least your little one is still eating Serena, so she's getting the nutrients she needs. Please keep us updated.

Thanks Smart Bunny and Judith. I still can't bring myself to empty her viv out. I had got it all prepared for her recuperation. She did so exceptionally well last time I think we just assumed she would be fine this time as well so it was even more of a shock. I just think she couldn't take any more.

Keep us posted Serena. Keeping my fingers crossed for her that everything goes ok.
