Think this is the correct section! As more to do with behaviour than breeding...
Anyhoo, recently, Oscar has been doing lots of dancing around his viv, due to breeding season (i'm assuming )
I've heard him hissing while i've been on the opposite side of the room and he's enclosed in his viv, and sometimes when i go in he has a wee tail shake and looks kinda as if he's about to strike! I stand my ground and put my hand into a ball (ok, i'm a tad worried about a bite, but sure it can't hurt that much!) and once he's had a sniff he seems fine. He is a bit jittery which he didn't use to be.
So my questions are is this just normal for a 'horny' male corn? haha! Will he calm down after breeding time? Do you think he'd actually bite me?
To be honest, if he's gona bite me i just wish he'd go ahead haha! The suspense is worse than what i assume a bite would be lol.
Also, he is totally fine when out the viv.
Sorry for the essay haha! |

Sounds like a typical male during the breeding season! The fear of a bite is far worse than the actual thing so try not to worry. |

Oh good!
Yeah i thought so from what i've read. I'm not 'worried' as such, i think i'd get a bit of a fright more than anything, because he usually has some strike on him at feeding time!
The thing is i've had cats, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits etc etc, and they can all bite, and to be honest i'd rather a bite from a corn than any of the others haha!
Thanks for replying! |

As someone noted for getting the occasional mauling from monsters with no legs ... Oh! the pain ... when you realize that the batteries in the camera are flat and you will be disqualified from being inducted into the Hall of Tags honours list.
Even if you are expecting it, try not to jerk away. It is the normal reflex but you could cause damage to the Corn's teeth or jaw. It really is just a nip and normally barely punctures the skin. So be prepared and make sure the batteries are fully charged.

haha I've seen your bite pics! yeah I know I shouldn't pull away, so everytime he does the tail shake I brace myself and wait for the hit! haha my camera sits right next to the vivs, I'm STILL trying to get a pic of him yawning, managed to miss 4times now!
I take it if he ever did get me, it would be ok to flic a drop of water on him to encourage him to let go? Don't wana do anything to scare or hurt him.
isn't it funny how we're more concerned about the animals getting hurt than us when we get bitten haha! |

Funnily enough, my once randy male Cereus has chilled right out and isn't bothered now. Sakana is twitching and tail rattling at me but Cereus has chilled right out and isn't bothered. Apparently breeding season is winter for him. |

Flicking water really does nothing much. Best thing to do is 'play dead' and relax. Most times a Corn will just tag and retreat. It is the Kings that will really latch on.
I don't recommend dunking under water, some folk do.
Best result I've had for quick release is a small dab of meths on your skin, just in front of the nose but not on the snake. I've been told that Listerine mouth wash will do the same thing. It worked instantly with Vambo ... thankfully.

I tried dunking the MBK, all that happened was a lot of playful bubble blowing and gripping tighter. |
