Just been to the local reptile shop pick up some pinkies as Ariels due her first feed with me on Thursday, looking round and saw a little Hognose and oh my days are they beautiful! How are they to keep as noticed a few posts on here about them; I know they are semi-venomous due to having fangs at the back of their mouths but just and owners info would be nice! |

They have amazing little characters. They really do seem to think they are a big snake in a little body lol. All bluff though. They can be fussy eaters but this is normally down to being kept to cold as they do prefer quite a warm hot spot 34c-35c and cool end temps of around 26c. Feeding is also more frequent, every 4-5 days, due to their fast metabolism. Ours is quite active usually out and about during the day but as soon as her light goes off she is off to bed lol. The venom is not really an issue. The majority of people do not have any reaction to it. The odd few that do will usually suffer from slight swelling and itching with redness and sometimes a head ache. There is the very occasional case where the swelling is very severe but this is quite rare I believe. Would highly recommend a hognose. |

We got our daughter *ahem, nothing to do with us wanting one* one for her birthday, a little male. He is ALWAYS out and about during the day unlike all our other snakes. He is such a little character, went hissing/butting mad at hubby when he was in the store collecting him and when he got him home - but as soon as he picked him up he was fine. Since then he's only ever hissed when presented with food or woken up lol! We are absolutely smitten with him, and hubby now wants to get a female for his birthday later in the year.
I believe hoggy breeding season is later in the year than corns - round about August time? But I would also guess that, just like corns, you can probably get hatchies all year round. I@m certainly going to be keeping my eyes out now ;) |

same here, I think when they were still evolving they must have been a bit stupid and just kept on slithering into a wall repetitively until they looked like that and then somehow managed to mate
don't hate me hoggie lovers, you know I am right |

@Smart Bunny: Normal Hoggie breeding season is actually now! Plenty of locking going on, so give it a few months and they'll be everywhere! However, they double clutch very easily, so you'll get more babies popping up in October too! My Adult Male, Scout, has turned into the foulest, angriest little ball of sexual frustration, lots of thrashing and accidentally smacking his head into his rub in rage, full on rattlesnake hissing and huffing! He's headbutted me a few times where it's been hard enough for his little nose to actually hurt a teeny bit lol!
Despite that though, Techno, I highly recommend them! If you're confident enough to deal with them going off their food, and their full on attitude, they make very rewarding snakes! Not all of them are fussy, but they know how they like things when it comes to food. Scout likes it just to be left in on his flat hide, Pyro likes you to tap it about on top of his log, where he then pops out and grabs it, and my little lady Rocket likes it warmed slightly via hairdryer hehe |

Will also add that ours has a weird eating behavior. It doesn't matter how you offer her the mouse, whether head first or bum first she will always take it just below the shoulders. Now most snakes would work their way to either end, not Stevie, she insists on folding it in half. Not always a pretty sight, we do get quite a few popped mice which she then smears over herself and her viv. I don't know if this is common eating like this for a hoggie. |
