Ok so ive been looking at start up kits from shops and online due to getting a hatchling doon. Ive noticed that not many come with a stat and cant work out why. Is it due to the matt being so small? My older snakes r matt statted so cant understand why I wouldnt for a hatchling. Bearing in mind some ppl have told me not to worry about a matt n put him on top of one of my vivs? This dont seem right to me either.

The little mats that come with starter kits are absolutely vicious!
They get much hotter much quicker than the bigger ones in my experience

The only thing that I can think of is price - with a stat probably being the most expensive part of a little faunarium starter kit, the price with it included might put potential buyers off? I dont know lol

We've often had comments on the starter setups before and people have grumbled that they don't have a stat with them.
You most certainly do need one so it should be in the setup!
It's a shame that the companies that manufacture the packages don't include them.
It's also irresponsible of the retailers not to tell people that they will need one. It makes me wonder why they don't because they'll usually 'push' anything to add to sales!

i find it easier and normally cheaper to do your own set up but if you want a start up kit the best one i have found is from reptilekeeping. link below:

Agreed with alib here, cheaper to buy the bits separately, most kits seem a bit highly priced for what they are!!

i got all my bits seperate for Cola.
Box with lockable handles £10 from staples. 17"x15"x7"
Fake plants £10 from dunhelmn mill.
Wooden logs £6 again dunhelmn mill.
Two hides one on cool one on warm side £8 on ebay.
Heat mat agiain £8 on ebay.
Did buy stat at full price £24 @ surrey pet supplies.
And digi thermostat £3 on ebay.
Total of £69 but i have only used half of the plant and one log so have kept these for when Cola moves to a viv.
So you have everything you need including stat for a couple of pound less. Bargain. And a picture of it below.

sorry water dish was £1 on ebay too.

Also in my vivs I have digital thermometers secured in place with my stat sensor in the mat. So in a faun do I place these under the substrate?

If your mat is outside the faun then yes put the thermometer probe inside the faun under the substrate touching the floor

Wow that's quite a deal from a shop, I'd grab it!! If using a faun and the mat is underneath then you can put the stat probe directly on the mat, and just put the thermometer probe inside under the substrate - or you can put both probes inside under the substrate, up to you.
