as a newbie, thanks for all the help Im getting.

Just wondered what ideal temp is. I have a stat with heating mat set at 84% ( chap who supplied snake came round and set up the wooden vivarium )

I am a little concerned that heat mat feels quite hot to the touch.there is a good covering of aspen on top, prob an inch or so but I am a little worried after reading postings about snakes getting burnt.
thanks

the dial on the stat is a guide start point only. Also you would need a digital thermometer on the substrate to know exactly what the temps are.

the ma shouldnt realy feel hot to the touch, how are you monitoring the temps

Hi. getting rather suspicious of heating set up, the more I read. had a good look at the viv set up. the probe for the stat is at the edge of the tank, nowhere near the mat, so I dont see how it can be monitoring the temp. so I reckon the mat, which is set up for 84 must be running at full blast the whole time. I presume I need to reposition the probe much close to the mat so that it can accurately regulate the temp, and then get a thermometer.fortunately stevie the snake seems to stay down the cool end. ( not really surprising )As I mentioned before ,, the viv was set up by shop.

Basically, the mat, thermostat probe and thermometer probe should be positioned like this...

Use the reading on the thermometer to get an accurate reading, and use the thermostat dial to adjust the temps.

Until you get a digital thermometer turn the mat off most stats are unreliable as to temps

0.0.1 CAROLINA (Bangle)
0.0.1 AMEL (Boozer)
