hey all so after much thought which larger bodied snake to buy i got my self a BCI (ill post some pics after she has settled in) so i bought it as a seconded hand set up with the snake 3x2x2 viv heating and lighting my question is it had a heat mat and a red night spot lamp, i have removed the heat mat i assume that is correct, but is just the red heat bulb ok as the only heat, ill put some leds in as a day light,
sugestions please the shop told me to leave the heat mat in but i read eveywhere they are not good for boa ? please advise
i would of put this on the boa site but signed up a few days ago and have not been accepted

I would personally swap that bulb for a ceramic bulb so there is not a light on 24/7 |

What type of stat is it? Most people use a pulse stat with a ceramic or a dimming stat. Even an on/off stats can be used. On/off stats will obviously continuously turn the ceramic on and off so the bulb will not last as long and the temperatures will fluctuate a lot. Best to use pulse or dimming. Remember some dimming stats have a minimum of 40w. But with a viv that size you would need a 150w ceramic anyway. |

How old, what size is the boa? I would add another hide and possibly a larger water bowl depending on size of snake. Make sure the ceramic is guarded, but I guess that the light has a guard so it may be suitable for a ceramic depending on type/size of guard. |

it is a 600w dimming habistat so a 150 ceramic would be ok ?

Problem with a heat mat and a heavy bodied snake is that if it lies on part of the mat you get thermal blocking and a localized build up of heat, regardless of where the sensor is located. This is one of the main causes of serious burns. The other is unguarded heat lamps. |

Yes that stat will be fine for 150w ceramic. Be careful with the guard though. Some guards are designed to be used with light emitting bulbs only and if you use that sort with a ceramic the guard itself will become very hot.
Looking forward to some pics |

I think that ceramic guards are usually a bit bigger/longer than a standard guard but I use a standard guard on my 150W ceramic and there in not that big a gap between the bulb and guard at the bottom and I can hold my hand on the guard without it burning. You can see how close it is here
