Apollo, my male corn snake who is going to be 2 years old next June and is still only 106g is acting very strangely.

He has always been my 'shy' snake, I never ever see him out and about unless I surprise him and then it's only a tail disappearing into a hide.

Tonight, I went to see him and he's charging about his viv like a mad thing! I opened the glass and he put himself onto my hands and started climbing me. Whilst it is a lovely change from having to fish him out of the dark depths of a hide all the time it just isn't like him.

When I put him back, rather than dashing for the nearest hide (which he has done ever since I got him), he started charging around again, nosing into all the corners as if looking for a way out. He even tried to come back out of the doors.

I stayed to watch him and he was still dashing about for ages after I put him back in. Normally he hates having people in the same room if he is out of his hides and doesn't let me watch him at all.

The temperatures are the same as always, a nice steady 28.4-28.6 in the warm end and he is otherwise okay, pooping etc.

He ate 5 days ago and I did think he needed to go up a food size (from a small which was only leaving a barely visible bulge to a medium) but he gets fed every 10 days so isn't anywhere near due a feed yet. I may offer him his medium in two days time in case he is hungry.

My question is, could this be because it is corn snake breeding season and I have an adult female corn snake (a proven one who has suddenly started feeding VERY enthusiastically, popping mice and everything!) kept in the same room as him?

I would have thought he would be too little to be 'interested in the ladies' but I'm struggling to explain his sudden change in behaviour in any other way...

Thanks for such a fast reply Georgina That was my first thought when I saw how he was acting but I'm surprised he is mature enough for that sort of thing yet. I just hope he continues to eat like a hoover because he's too little to be doing the whole hunger strike thing!

That might be it! Males do not need to be as big as females to breed for obvious reasons, so maybe he's ready and scenting her makes him active.

Ha ha ha ha, he's a randy little teenager lol!!! I think it is possible for them to breed from about a yr (just a really bad idea for the females etc).... and sounds like your female might not mind at all either lol. Good luck, hope he doesn't go on hunger strike, you're going to have to make extra sure those 2 vivs are well secured :p.

Yeah, I think they're both up for it this year! Unfortunately I don't have a hatchling rack or an incubator yet so they will have to wait until 2014 for their first breeding attempt together
