Hi I am 11 and have just got my first snake, his name is Jasper. I have always wanted a snake, but now that I have finally got one I am surprised at how scared I am at handling him. He seems angry every time I get him out of his viv, he hisses and scares me. How can I encourage him to not do this? Is it just keep handling him and in time he will stop or will this be something that happens all the time? Once he is out he is happy in my hands and enjoys slithering around my hands and arms. |

You need to leave him in his new home for a week without handling him, just do water changes, then slowly build up the amount of time he's out for |

Hi and welcome, As Scaly says give hima week to settle in, while he's settling in you can always to the sock trick: tuck a clean sock into your waist band for 24hrs then pop it in snakies house. this way he can get used to your scent while he settles in. |

Hello and welcome As mentioned leave for a week to settle and then after that start handling for short periods of time to build up their trust in you. When you go to get him out don't hesitate just be confident and pick him up. It's a learning curve for both of you and in time your confidence will grow and it will all become natural to you |

Hello and welcome, Aden. How old is your snake, is it a hatchling, or an adult? Hatchlings are usually a bit more nervous than bigger snakes. If you think about it, they are so much smaller than us, and in nature, everything eats them. Most of "aggression" is usually just fear. Try to not be nervous, if you are, it makes the snake nervous, too.
Like the others have said, leave him for a week, and try the sock trick. After the week is over, just take it easy, if you find him roaming his vivarium, you could just put your hand in, and leave it there, he might crawl on it himself. Or, if he's in the hide, you could take the hide out, and then reach straight for him, one calm movement, don't hesitate, don't give him too much time to react. Scoop him up from the side, they find anything coming from above them quite scary.
Even if you get bitten, it shouldn't hurt much, if you've got a baby, it won't even break the skin. If you ever got bitten by hamster, that's much worse, than any corn snake can do. He's not nasty, if he's ok whilst he's out, so maybe he's just scared and trying to get you to leave him alone. He will learn, with time, that you won't hurt him, and he'll become calmer. Good luck , and let us know, ho he's doing.
