| Hi, some of you may have seen a post I made about heat mats vrs bulbs. Well I've decided to go with the bulb as the back room he'll be going in is generally cool and I feel I'll achieve an overall better ambient temperature, however I'm not sure on the probe location. Have seen plenty of info for mats but not bulbs. I'll be putting a hide over on the hot side, so does the probe go inside the hide or outside ? |

| Personally I would put it on the guard but whether that right it not I'm sure someone will correct me. I have always wonders aboud bulb as if they need 28 degrees on the viv floor the bulb must be hotter. So if the snake wraps around the guard its hotter? |

| Are you going to use a ceramic? I would suggest that you do otherwise you need a second night time heat source (unless you are going to offer a temp drop at night) I have my stat probe on top of the substrate directly beneath the ceramic bulb. A guard is essential with whatever bulb type you go for. |

| A ceramic is a non light emitting bulb. If you have a normal light emitting bulb then to give 24 hour heat that would mean the light would be on all the time as well and your corn would never see night time. Some people who use these also have a heat mat to use at night when the light is off to keep the temps up, if you have a ceramic bulb then there is no need for this as it can be left on 24/7. With any light you will need a ceramic light fitting and a bulb guard and then depending on the bulb you go for the appropriate thermostat. I think most people use a pulse stat with ceramics and a dimming stat with a light emitting bulb but I believe that you can use a dimming stat with both (I think pulse stats are a bit cheaper which is why they are used a bit more often with a ceramic) |

| I understand bit now Donnie Cheers. Although I did speak to someone this morning who reckons snake do not see the spectrum red so a normal bulb won't be fine and not disrupt the day/night cycle ??? Is this true ? It seems to be a mine field of knowledge lol |

| harry, a good way to do it is have the probe pinned to the back about 6 inches above the floor under the lamp and guard, then stick a thermometer probe in or very near his hot end hide and adjust the stat and read off the thermometer! :) hope this helped! |

| Agree with Donnie entirely, I use different heating scenarios one of which is bulbs in conjunction with heat mats for day night cycling, intend to go over to ceramics when my bulb stock runs out, there expensive and don't last that long compared to ceramics. |

well I've been pricing up the 2 setups today and the ceramic is only £20 more, which tbh the cost isn't an issue. Getting the best setup I can is what's important so I think I will go for the ceramic and some of them nice LED lights. The only problem now is do I go with IKEA or Maplins colour changing remote controlled dazzlers |

I have heard that the maplin ones will sometimes change colour when you turn you tv channel over, or is it when you change the lights colour the tv changes. One of the 2 so maybe do a bit of research into this problem as I know it would annoy the hell out of me |

| I'm totally done with any bulbs for heating now. They keep breaking every 2 months or so (not sure what's causing it, not spikes in my network anyway), way too expensive for my taste. |

I didn't know there was that much price difference in the bulbs as I has never looked in to light emitting bulbs. I get my kit (mostly) from swell reptiled and I think the ceramics on there are about £18 for 150W so about the same price as you are looking at. I thought the fittings needed were the same though and both needed to be ceramic fittings due to the heat generated |
