Can you help me get my head around heating an adult BRB, am confused from what i've read heat mats out as they are too heavy bodied and it can cause thermal blocking, ceramics dry out the air therfore effecting humidity, so whats the best way to heat an adult BRB?
Thanks in advance

Ceramics with an automated misting system makes sense. Care sheet here,

I was concerned about this before getting Prism... but was told that heat mats are actually fine for the adults as although heavier than corns, they are still relatively slender compared with the other boas. For more info check out the Rainbow Boa forum http://www.therainbowboa.co.uk/forum/ (arrgh, you're making me feel bad now, I've not been on there in ages lol! )

Oooooh, are you getting a BRB lupi lou? I'm quite green

I started researching care of them a while back and came to the same conclusion that smart bunny has, heat mats seem to be okay according to most people.

I've got to get a bigger house before I get my BRB as according to OH I can't get rid (or modify) any of our furniture to accommodate an adult size viv for one He's such a spoilsport

Thats is very mean!! I've been thinking it over for a while as we only have room for one more addition, I've always liked them and after holding a little one at a shop i've made up my mind. Just have to work on the o/h, although he thought the little one was very nice he's worried that I'll end up with 3 'big' snakes. I have pointed out that the boys wont be that big and a BRB isn't that much bigger! He wants to see an adult so he can get an idea of size, I sujested a trip to coast to coast exotics as they have 2 adults in, but thats to far to go apparently!

Point out to him that actually the BRB won't be as long as the corns (OK OK so it will be fatter, but not a loooot and if you get a male it will be smaller than if you get a female... )

haha i did tell him that the males dont get as big, and that as boas go they are quite small, then I when for the method of saying 'its not like I want to get a Burm' and showed him a pic of how big they get he's slowly coming round to the idea.
I also pointed out that as we would get a young one he would be used to handling it by the time it was all grown up

I haven't decided how I will heat mine when they are adults, initially I did think I would stay with mats because as smartbunny said they aren't a huge bodied snake and thermal blocking 'shouldn't' be an issue - but the more I think about it the more I worry that they 'might' cause thermal blocking.
I am looking into radient heat panels (such as the reptile radiator by habistat) or possibly an AHS system (not sure I really like these as if it breaks then you have to replace both the heat source and the thermostat as it is a combined unit)
I may just go with a ceramic bulb and all the relevant stuff that is needed with it and have a huge water vessel to maintain the humidity.
Lupilou - stop lurking and join plus I hope you convince the OH, they are awesome snakes
Smartbunny - get your butt back over there, we need updates on Prism
Moppet - buying a new house is a little 'extreme' just to be able to have a BRB, but if needs must do it

with the reptile radiator, am i right in thinking you would put the stat probe and a thermometer probe on the floor under where the radiator is attached to the roof of the viv?

I will be signing up to the forum at some point :-)

That is how I would be placing the stat and temp probes, but will probably ask questions on the site if that is the route I go down.
The other question I would need answering would be 'what wattage' radiator would I need to obtain the correct temps in a 4' viv.
There will always be questions I need answering and the forum has some very knowledgable people - I just have to be patient for answers as it is not as active as the corn forum
There is also a good Brazilian Rainbow Group on facebook - this has lots of very knowledgable people

I lurk on the darkside too - I am a member but it is full of far too opinionated people for my liking. It was off the darkside that I sourced Indigo my male BRB
I haven't looked too hard into alternative heating yet, still trying to source my ideal permanent vivs.
I too would love a baby BRB from snakesitter, as you say they are beautiful.

I've been looking at viv's too and still haven't decided, been doing lots of research before I take the plunge,I want to make sure I can afford every thing the little one will need throughout its life! still not sure where an adult viv would go yet!

I have some cheap 2' plastic pennine vivs that I will temporarily house them in before they move into their permanent 4' vivs.
I have looked at viper vivs, Hendersons plastic vivs and procages, all are more expensive than wooden vivs.
The joys of only having to find a place for one adult viv, I need space for a stack of four - considering converting the spare room into a reptile room.
With regards to equipment I am slowly acquiring stuff that I will need for them and storing until required

I must admit I thought when they were talking about 'flexwatt undertank heaters or whatever' I thought that was the same as a heatmat, but I now think from re-reading that I may have to change my mind on the heatmat idea too lol.

*whispers* I think I'm just going to stalk Blackcat's posts and copy her as her snakies are bigger than mine... off to look up pennine vivs rofl!!!

Oooh hang on I read about them before - didn't they melt easily?!

I think you are correct about them melting easily smartbunny, but as I only plan to use them with a heat mat and a stat they should cope with 30 centigrade. They (the snakes) should all be small enough to still be on heat mats whilst in their 2' vivs.
Also I bought them second hand for £10 each, easily disinfected as plastic but not the nicest to look at lol.
I looked at flexwatt on youtube and it looks like heat mat to me, not sure if boaphile vivs (the type snakesitter uses) have a space to slot under floor heating like the monkfield vivs do and if this would alleviate thermal blocking.
@ Smartbunny - I need to find someone to 'Stalk' so I can get the answers to my questions
