Helloo! I'm writing a animal ethics something something essay and I would loveeee your opinions on live feeding. I know it's illegal in England but i'm sure some of you do it anyway.. Do you think it's right? Or wrong? When do you think it's 'ok' to feed your snakey live food? Thanksies for the contribution, So far I have passed all my essay's thanks to you people :D <3 |

There is a sticky on it somewhere but you will find the majority of people are dead set against it as it is just too much of a risk to the snake and just seems to be done as an entertainment factor to the owners more than anything, my feelings are that it is only really acceptable in cases where it is a last resort for a non feeder.

I would only feed live if the snake refused to eat defrosted mice/rats. I would try all other rodents/chicks first before resorting to live but would choose live over forced feeding. I guess if I sit and think about it I would not feed my dog a live rabbit or something similar just because that is what his ancestors would eat so I see no reason for it to be different for snake. The majority of snakes that are fed live food are fed this way for the owners enjoyment and for no other reason. |

I am against live feeding if possible, however laws allow you to do so if its a last resort. Mine all eat defrost except a pair of baby boas, I've tried everything except live yoghurt (getting some soon) and at the same time as buying them (I was told that they only eat FK) I bough a trio of young mice. They came of age a while ago and one had babies two days ago. From the time that I bought them until now I have been holding them and putting the mouse down their throat until only the tail sticks out, there is then a 50% chance that they either swallow it or spit it out. Very stressful. I hate doing it but they won't eat anything else, and they are so tiny I don't want to lose them. Last night I offered each one a pinky (live) but no interest, I put this down to the pinkies not looking like mice lol. They are usually eating big fuzzies or small smalls anyway, so I'm going to wait until the mice grow a bit and try again. The pinkies were put to sleep (CO2) and I assist/force fed them.
It's not fun at all. I hate doing it and wouldn't buy fussy feeders again, unless they were rare morphs at low prices (which mine are). |
