Hi.

My name is Julia, but a lot of people call me Julz.

I've been wanting a corn snake since I was about 7 years old (I'm now 26 lol), and it's only been now that my parents have allowed me to get one :D. Trouble is, I've got to wait about 18 months before I can actually acquire my dream lol. Reason being, is that I currently own 3 female gerbils (Alice, Esme and Bella) and a female Syrian hamster (Chaos) and Bella and Chaos are currently residing in my 2 terrariums...so obviously no room for my Corn just yet.

My parents did allow me to get a gecko when the furry ones have passed away, but after looking around at some, and getting distracted by the beautiful, mystifying Corn Snakes...and a little persuading from me...I have now started my research on getting my first ever Corn Snake.

OK...I am now waffling lol, so will now start asking a few questions if I may:

1) Bella (female gerbil) is currently residing in my smaller 45x45x45cm Exo Terra Terrarium. Would this be a suitable starting size tank for a new Corn Snake (when Bella is out of it of course lol)?

2) Is there a way of knowing when to change from 'pinkie' mice to 'fluff' mice?

3) With heating mats, do they go along the back of the terrarium or front to back of the terrarium?

That's my lot to be starting with...off to go and read through as much as I can before I go to sleep.

Julz xx

Hello and welcome. The exo should be fine asking as you give plenty if cover. You up food size when there is no visual bump in the snake after feeding. And the heat mat goes under the tank x

Welcome to the forum! You'll find that corns are very, very addictive... :p

1) the general rule is to have the length and width of the terrarium added up be at least as long as your snake. So in your case, 45x45 would be fine up to a length of about 90cm :) Some people say hatchies don't like large vivs so having a smaller one might actually work in your favor (although I've always housed hatchies in bigger vivs without any issues, just need to provide enough hides).

2) The size of the prey item should never exceed 1,5x the thickest part of your snake's body. Once prey doesn't really leave a bulge anymore, you can try to move up a size. It's not really an exact science ^^

3) Doesn't really matter, especially in your case (with a square viv). Just make sure you put the water bowl on the cold end to prevent faster growth of bacteria / evaporation of the water :)

Good luck with getting your new snakey! If I may give you one piece of advice before getting your snake - look into genetics. Breeding may not seem interesting / an option now, but many people including myself have fallen victim to that irrisistible urge of seeing those cute little noses poke out of their eggs every year. If you can, try to get a snake that you love (both in terms of appearance and personality) and if you have more than one choice, pick the one with the more interesting genes ^^

Thank you for the information Georgina and Isoldael.

Isoldael - Lol...I know Corn snakes can be addictive. My friend has 5 of them and is getting another one soon. I'm not quite clued up on the morphing genetics yet, but hopefully by the time I get mine, I will be. I am hoping to get an Amel (I think it is called) though (red, white mottled patches - similar to a normal corn, but without the black). My friend has got one and she is gorgeous! Really calm and friendly. Although did get struck and bitten by my friends newbie one which she got on Saturday "Caramel" I think it is. Little one hasn't got a name yet, but didn't hurt or break my skin when newbie did bite...so definitely not put off by it lol.

My parents have put their feet down at one at max though...but when I get my own place that will probably most definitely change lol...but until then...parents rules lol.

Thanks Georgina and Isoldael for the info about feeding and heating as well :)

Here's an interesting site for you to look at: http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/

You can find pictures of most morphs there, including the changes they go through from hatchie to adult. The morph you mentioned, amelanistic, usually starts off looking quite white/red but they turn out very orangy (unless you have a selectively bred one that stays white, such as candycane). I can stare at that page for hours on end xD

Welcome and congrats on getting to get a snake at last! My main advice would be to read all of the stickies on this site, they're a mine of informaton covering just so many topics. The one about setting-up a viv is fantastic.

Thanks Mags53.

I already have 2 Exo Terra Terrariums, 1 which is 45x45x45cm and the other which is a 90x45x45cm, which I am going to convert into homes for the Corn Snake when I get one. The smaller one will be for when snake is still a baby, but will transfer into bigger one when snake is older and longer.

Thanks so much for the great information and welcome so far.
