Hello!!!
Hi everyone. After a couple of months pondering over the idea of getting my first snake and doing some lengthy research (and talking the missus into it) :-), i got my snow corn hatchling last week. I thought signing up on this forum would be a good idea too as it seems to have some established corn snake experts and enthusiasts and would be great for getting me more the familiar with keeping them. After a short 1 mile trip home I handled him for a good 15 minutes and apart from being a little nervous when he saw my hands, once picked up he was great...really calm and exploring and tasting all over my arms and wrapping over my fingers. I set up his new home in a taylor made hatchling viv and have let him settle in for a couple of days. Plenty of exploration going on. The store i got him from said his feed day would have been today so i decided to try him this morning. He was interested in the pinkie as soon as he saw it and after about a minute of tasting the air he struck it a couple of times and swallowed it down although bottom first. I've read up and it says it doesn't reaaly make any difference which way in pinkies because they have no fur and this is a way snakes differ which way round to swallow its prey. I'm happy he's fed and intend to leave him a couple of days now to digest and will then attempt some more handling. I was told to keep my set up simple until he reaches 6 months to a year and then he will need a larger viv which i will go to town on :-), my current set up consists of a heatmat, stat and thermometer, hide and waterbowl. If anybody has any tips or feel they can help me in anyway and give me some advice, that would be great...
Fascinating creatures, Loving it

Welcome to the forum Good on you for doing your research before getting the snake.
I'm glad that he has fed for you, that's great news. However, most people suggest leaving a new snake for a week without handling so that they can settle in properly.
A lot of my snakes feed backwards, Aphrodite seems to feed backwards more often than forwards!
My hatchling tubs have 2 hides and extras made by toilet roll tubes (slightly flattened). Cheap and they love them |

Mine are in faunariums and they have a coconut hide over the mat, a hide made from a butter tub on the cool end (with loads of aspen in it for burrowing)and the whole is joined by the cardboard inner from a tin-foil pack that they use for a tunnel. The butter tubs are easy to keep sterile and the cardboard inner is easily replaced. I also have some bits of greenery in the form of a plastic aquarium plant that they like to slither in and out of. |

Hi and welcome. Good advise given, as always, from our members. Also have a look on our caresheet, via the homepage. Lots of great info on there. Another source of help are the stickies, have a browse at those too. Make sure you leave your snake alone for 48 hours after feeding to digest food properly, you really don't want a regurge. Anything that you're not sure about, please ask! |
