I'm a bit worried about this - we're going away for a week over Christmas. I'm keeping the snakes at home this time, as my stepdaughter has agreed to change their water every other day. To make it easier, and to give the snakes a rest, I thought about stopping their feeds week before and turning the mats off when we go, leaving the snakes at room temperature. It can wary 17 - 21 C. Typically, I think Little T is going into blue, so is likely to shed while we are away. Will he be ok shedding whilst being quite cold, or can this cause problems? I wanted to keeps the mats off, as my stepdaughter doesn't want to be checking the temps probes, or cleaning the poo, etc. Would the low temperature affect shedding? |

Would of thought if your temps were stable normally i cant see a reason to turn off the mats it just takes a glance to see they are ok |

There is no point turning the mat off at all, so long as it's stated there's is no reason to do so, what would they need a break from? lol. Only thing you will do by suddenly turning off the mat is confusing them. Cool sides of 17-21 is fine but for the whole tank to be that temp so suddenly not quite so good. |
A very special super, duper thanks for K :3 |

Thanks guys. Staple, it'd mainly be a break from me . I thought as they won't be fed for 2 weeks, it'd help them lose less energy, if they were cooler, and their metabolism slower, but that's probably over fussy
The mats are stated, and running ok, was just worried they'd knock the probes off or something going wrong when I'm not there. My stepson is home, but he won't check on them.
But yes, I did think it could confuse them, they're both trying to hibernate, both are really inactive and in coldest point, and I actually, for the first time, had to coax Bazil to eat - she's normally very voracious feeder. So if I switched them off, they might think they ARE going to hibernate and I might have problems when I come back.... |

Why make them not feed for 2 weeks?
Feed them before you go, they will pooh on day 2/3 and then you will be back 3-4 days later to clean.
Or just feed them 3 days before you go so you can clean them up and what not before you go.
Either way i wouldnt worry, 2 weeks is nothing to a snake. As long as its got fresh water and temps are stable.
Enjoy your week away!

Cheers, Gaz, I chose not to feed before I go away, only because Bazil is a pooing machine, she does 2 - 3 poos after each feed, and I like to clean them out straight away. I dread to think what I'd come back to after a week :-o! But yes, two weeks without food shouldn't be a problem for them, it's just me worrying as usual. :-) |
