Cornflake has now refused two meals (small adult mice, fed once a week). I know it sounds silly, but she has refused food since I got a new batch of mice with brown fur! Is this just a coincidence or do you think here might be something wrong with the mice? After how many refusals should. Get worried?

Thanks

Suzy

What have you done to encourage her to feed? It can make a difference if you change the colour but it's not that common. Don't worry too much because snakes can go a long time without feeding. We have plenty of time to help and guide you through various ways to get her feeding again.

I have heard of some snakes refusing dark coloured mice if they have always been fed white ones. It is possible it could be that, but like herriotfan said, it is quite rare. You have quite some time before you need to really get worried, several months normally.

It might be worth buying one white mouse and trying her with that next time, just to rule out her taking a dislike to your batch of mice/brown mice. There's loads of techniques to get her eating again and like herriotfan said, we'll all help

Ok. First thing's first. I will get some White mice today and see if that will tempt her.

Usually when I feed her, I pop her in her feeding place (a large cardboard lid from an old box) then add the mouse. She usually smells it right away and after a couple of minutes has started eating. When she is finished, I let her slither from the lid back into her viv, where she will usually have a little drink then will go into one of her hides.

The first refusal I posted about. She got the head in then seemed to change her mind and spat it out. I left her a week and tried again with another (brown furred) mouse but she paid it no attention whatsoever.

I will try with a White one and if I have no luck, I will be back for some suggestions on how to temp her.

Thanks guys x x x

Hmm. Interesting. It took her a little while to get the White mouse down as one of it's arms was sticking out but she ate it! Hopefully she won't regurge it. That leads me to two conclusions:

1) the batch of brown mice were dodgy in some way, or
2) Cornflake is racist as far as mice are concerned!

Fingers crossed that she eats one ok next week!

Glad she ate for you. Just keep an eye on her and if you have no problems then I'd ditch the brown mice and get white again. Sometimes our snakes can be fussy little devils.

When lightning was on hopper he would eat the black or white ones but refuse the brown! I've heard if people shaving and adult mice because the snake won't eat it! Funning little things. Just goes to show how domesticated they are :)

Yep, they can certainly be fussy. It was a nightmare having to shave fuzzy mice, thank goodness Joanna decided she likes fur after all.

My female will only eat white lol, she always looks disgusted at me if I offer her anything but white. She took a brown one once and then decided she didn't like it and spat it back up after about an hour. So I left her thinking maybe there was something wrong with her .Tried her after 14 days with a white and she took it and kept it down. So I too have a racist snake, Cereus will eat anything... Including Day Old Chicks(legs, wings and beak included) so he obviously has no problems with what's food and what's not. He even used to eye up my fish XD
