hey guys got a heat mat for my new viv today (im new http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=27266) and the guy in the shop, pets paradise to be precise (ooh that kinda rhymes) said not to put it on the bottom under the substrate but on the back wall of the viv, as the my beautiful snakeys could burrow under the sub and lay on the heatmat thus burning themselves, any input? or is this just personal preference? ive been looking around it seems some people do it both ways :P ideas on the placement of the sensor could be useful too :)
cheers ladies and gents Josh

if you have a thermostat snakey will not get burnt, its best to have it on the floor, glue gunned down with the thermostat and thermometer probes elaccy banded together on top, with only a think covering of substrate on top :) |

A thermostat is an essential piece of kit. Mat goes on the floor with a thin layer of substrate on top. Thermostat probe and digital thermometer sensor should be tied together. (I use small cable zip ties.) and placed on top of the heat mat surface. Weigh the sensors down with the edge of a hide or other piece of furniture.
Set the temperature control on the thermostat using the thermometer reading as an accurate measurement. Aim for 28.C max.
The snake WILL burrow and lay on the mat whenever it chooses. It will not get burned as long as the thermostat is properly installed. |

As ^^ above. Most snakes shuffle aspen around to where they want it and borrow in it. As long as you have the thermostat & thermometer set up correctly you'll be ok. Glad they fed ok for you. |

cool ive positioned it under the right hand side of the substrate now, 36 inch tank and the heat is 16inch so its perfect :) only thing is the thermo stat doesnt appear to be turning off and its been on for hours now, is this normal or should i be worried that its not getting to the correct heat??
need my digital thermometers to arrive :(, the dial on the wall of the viv is reading something around the 25deg mark |

The dial thermometers are next to useless. There is no point measuring the temperature on the wall as this reads the ambient air temperature. You need the reading the temperature on the actual mat, this will be the warmest area of your set up.

Surely if the mat is on the wall, the snake could lie next to it and get burned just as easily as sitting on it on the floor?? I don't get that. I put mine on the floor under a thin layer of substrate, my snakes move about the substrate how they please, even making little tunnels out of the aspen.
Where have you put the probe for the stat? Is it on top of the mat and touching it? |
