hey guys, im brand new to the forum and brand new to the keeping and caring of corns! im called Josh and im 21, live in east yorkshire (driffield)

just picked up my corns from a chap at work ;literally an hour ago, for next to nothing as hes getting rid because hes moving and also his new girlyfriend HATES them. ive been after getting some for ages because i think they are fantastic and i have always had an interest in snakes, lizards, the lot!

however (and if im not supposed to post this here then please redirect me!) after doing all my research (mainly on here) im very worried about his current set up and i want to improve it, unfortunately i wont have time until sunday.
basically its about a 30 gallon wooden viv, heated only with a lamp on a dimmer at one end (really need a heat mat dont i, surely) thermometer hasnt arrived yet so i cant measure the exact temp and the substrate hes got in there is hay!? i can only imagine this is not good as it gets me sneezing sometimes, so that will need replacing i reckon. im gonna hit the petshop in town as soon as i can, but im working all week. but any online sites or shops you could advise would be greatly recieved :D
they are around 3 years old (he thinks) and about 3ft long, boy and a girl that have been together since hatchlings (considering separation, opinions?)
theyve been living like this for around 3 years and dont seeeeeemm to be too bothered, but i want to create a much better set up so any suggestions or help would be lovely.

sorry for the essay on my very first post but i just want a tip top home for my new friends!

cheers guys
Josh

Hey josh welcome to the forum eek where to start the heating setup sounds like a disaster waiting to happen id get it out asap and yes get a mat and thermostat asap the heat mat should be between a third to half the legnth of the width to provide a thermal gradient
id remove the hay there could be all kindsa of parasites lurking it plus its dusty and could potentially cause an ri just lay down some newspaper if u have nothing else
Id definately consider housing the two snakes seperately or they will breed and breed and just really damage the health of both snakes longterm plus theres added risk of injury or cross contamination feeding issues etc its just easier and safer to seperate really (just my opinion others may and will disagree we all do things differently lol)
Have a look at websites such as swell reptiles or seapets or blue lizard all sell reptile supplies and things personally i use megazorb as a substrate i get it from the local equestrian centre around 8 quid a sack brilliant stuff but again everyones got their own preferences

Best of luck and be sure to post some piccys soon we love pics here :-)

Welcome to the forum

Some people do use lamps to heat corn snakes, as long as there is a dimmer stat and a cage on them to stop the corn snake touching the bulb itself (which can burn them) then they aren't too bad.

I would say hay could be quite bad for the snake mostly because of dust. Hay is quite dusty and snakes have quite sensitive respiratory systems. Hay can also bring nasty little beasties such as mites with it. You would be better off putting kitchen roll in instead of the hay until you can pick up something more suitable. pets at home sells aspen suitable for corn snake substrate and they are normally open until quite late, our local one is open until 8pm.

There's a lot of debate about housing corn snakes together long term, I'm sure there is a thread around here somewhere about cohabiting corn snakes...might be worth a search.

You have the right attitude and everyone on here will help you to get it right We don't mind questions or essays.

Welcome!!

These guys pretty much summed it up...

- Probably no to the hay,
- Seperate them asap,
- Some do use lamps, but they must be guarded effectively. I think heat mats are just less hassle personally.

Welcome to the hobby :)

welcome along,

lights and dimmers are fine for corns the stats there so nothing to worry about but as above has said light guard is required. The only thing i would suggest is if its a white bulb change it to a less intrusive coloured one, red or similar its nothing to do with heat but a pain on the eyes with white light 24 hours a day.

Aye get rid of the hay its not a good substrate for corns, they treat it with all sorts so switch to something like aspen.

Keeping them together / apart my preference would be apart if they are opp sex its just down to luck they havent bred yet and of they do breed they need splitting anyways.

thanks alot guys for the advice! much appreciated, i will get on the heat situation asap, finish work at 1 tomorrow providing all goes well, so if they can cope the night (as they have for 3 years) with just the lamp then ill get it sorted tomorrow!
ill take the hay out right away then and put in some paper towels or something similar, i thought it could cause problems which is why i was surprised to see it in there!
as for re housing one of them that might have to wait til after christmas so hopefully wont be a problem beforehand :/

the boy is a nice dark green colour, the girl a lovely orange, ive called them Ringo and Yolanda (pulp fiction)

hope i can give these guys the home they deserve with your help :)

cheers again

Hi and welcome aboard.
First of all get rid of the hay now and put newspaper or kitchen roll in for now.
I use guarded bulbs on a dimming stat and you don't need a heat mat if you keep that.
It would probably be cheaper to buy a guard, if it hasn't got one, than to but a heat mat and a matstat. The dimming termostat wouldn't be any goog to use with a mat.
The snakes will need some sort of hides. It's a good idea to have one in both ends. You can make one using an old box, any old plastic container, even use a toilet/kitchen roll tube!
You would certainly be best to seperate the snakes if you've got a male & female. The stress of both being sexually mature will cause no end of stress.
Have you got a water dish for them?
Let us know how you get on and please ask whatever you want.

Edit to add.....sorry for repeating others advice. They posted while I was typing so didn't see it until this had been posted!!
