Do NOT use Dettol products with reptile equipment.

I have already had a reply from their Customer Services that it is not suitable.

Use either approved reptile disinfectants such as F10.
Or plain bleach in a 10% solution. This requires proper rinsing and plenty of time to air and dry off afterwards but is safe to use as long as it is PLAIN Bleach and not with pine additives.

Johnsons Milton is definitely fine. Spoke to their lead lab technician. You can pick this up in home bargains for £1.00 for a massive bottle. 30ml to 5L was the recommended dilution

I use bleach diluted in water and then rinse off the stuff with loads of water. It works great and is quite cheap :)

I use Dettol surface cleanser and find it great. I figure If you can use it on a baby's highchair tray, and where food is prepared you can use it in a viv.

No Katie. I specifically asked them about surface cleaners as a general disinfectant and they said absolutely not to use it. Even when I said I wasn't asking for their 'official approval' they still said not to use it.

Just as some things are safe for human use does not necessarily mean that it is OK for anything else. EG: pine, cedar etc. harmless but deadly.

As Auld says above detol / surface cleaners are a no go. Do a google search, if you are unsure of what not to use.
Best to stick with Milton / bleach diluted (as I said above I confirmed Milton for snake cleaning use with top lab technician 30ml milton to every 5l water). That would be the cheapest option. Or like most people here recommend the F10 (made for reptiles).

I punt the info on Dettol whenever questions about disinfectant pops up. Feel free to spread the word. Stickies tend to need pointing to. ;)

Also, any disinfectant which causes a cloud when added to water should never be used with reptiles.

As i posted for the mods attention, G quite rightly said no as there are so many disenfectants to use, but i think a sticky on what NOT to use is important, as Katie said about being safe for babies, no wonder she assumed it would be safe for snakes, turns out just as bad as using pine substrate
