A friend of mine has asked to post this for her.
Her flatmate owns 3 corn snakes, 2 males and a female. He calls them his babies and loves them to bits apparently but when he got admitted to hospital yesterday he asked her to look after the corns. She got a friend who owns and works with reptiles over as she knows nothing about them so she needed a little help and advice. When her friend saw the state the corns were in she was disgusted. So my friend posted this on RFUK(the pics are missing but I have them to post) and got all this slating...
http://www.reptileforums.co.uk/forums/snakes/912511-public-support-snake-neglect-case.html

Now, the female is a very obvious Triangle shape and if you look at her head you can see she is in need of help. She's 4.5ft long.
Female Amel.

Males(no where near as bad but apparently still bad)

Now, I’m not saying the males are really bad as they look OK to me but apparently in person you can see their spines. However, the female really does need help…

Really, I'd like opinions(well my friend would but she's not on here...) so what's your opinions on the situation?

I don't know if all pics will work, if not can an admin please lean up the coding since I can't seem to edit my posts after posting them.

if that snake is one a large a week, there is a very serious health issue with it. wouls start by getting a fecal sample to a lab for testing.

Would also consider feeding smalls or mediums every 7 days for now to get something inside it.

if that snake is taking large every fortnight it is still seriously ill, or that snake isn't taking every fortnight. Is worth checking for parasites by a fecal sample to a lab.

also something doesnt ring quite true, it takes a large every 2 weeks but recently regurged a medium? This corn is in a poor way needs help from someone that actually knows what they are doing im afraid.

Don't want any problems, but would like to give my opinion.

Firstly I agree that this snake is underweight from studying the images. But I would consider firstly speaking to your flatmate, before taking such action as RSPCA.

As you have said the snake was a rescue and has only been in the care of your flat mate for 2 months. If he is a problem feeder or has underlying conditions like gmac has outlined then then snake needs to be seen by a vet.

Be very careful of such allegations, unless certain that your flat mate is liable for neglect. As this may cause some upset for many people.

I'm glad that you've taken actions to help. But slow and steady wins the race so try smaller feeds. I seriously consider speaking to your flat mate and see if you can get him to consider re homing the snake.

Tbh I can tell a neglected animal mainly by the conditions of the tank / vivarium?

I find this topic very disturbing and upsetting and hope that the snake gains weight. But please please please clarify with your flat mate just incase he is not guilty of neglect.

Best of luck and please do not be offended by my post

Ps - just read your post at rfuk. Please ignore the above. Dirty water, black bedding and no stat or thermometer (big no no) Get these snake a new home

I agree with the general consensus on the dark side but not with so much spite. Yes the female is under weight, but being a rescue the guy probs got her Like that and is 'trying' to get her back up to weight. The fact that she regurged is probably because she not being handled much in the hope she will eat. So being handled and moved around as upset her.and you should weight atleast 10 days to feed after a regurge with not contact only to change water. The owner needs to be spoken to so that your friend can pass this info on. If the owner is not going to be out soon then the snakes need to go to someone with more knowledge. I don't think the owner would have been so keen to ask for help if he thought his snakes were neglected and asked for help not a full on attack.

It's not me that's posted it, it's a friend of mine. If you read all 5 pages of the RFUK thread you'll see that she had it worded wrong and that he has had the female a lot longer than 2 months as he'd already got her when my friend moved in with him and she moved in 2 months a go. Plus as has been said in the RFUK thread she isn't actually going to call the RSPCA and the flatmate has agreed that the snakes are not well looked after. Apparently he does nothing with the snakes(no handling, hardly remembers to feed, no cleaning) and when she went to get the males out one struck and bit my friend pretty hard(she hasn't put this in the thread but showed me a pic of the bite). The female reared but didn't have the energy to keep herself raised up and strike so ended up giving up and just laying there. All the snakes are being looked after now. The female has been put on a feeding schedule to get her weight back up and is being taken to the reptile specialist at the vet today so will update everyone later on that situation. The males are being fed large mice once every 10 days right now to get their health back up so that their spines aren't as visible/can't be felt as much. The situation is being sorted My friend spoke to her flatmate and her flatmate had the cheek to say "My snakes do not need a vet, they're perfectly healthy. The female could do with putting a little weight on but not much or she'll be fat!" Now hang on... Mine get fed every 3 weeks min and they're actually losing their weight because they were fat(Weighed them last night, 800 grams each ) so yes, she'll put weight on if fed little and often but she'll not become fat unless you over-feed her.

I will not get into a dispute with you or any other member, as this forum is a very friendly place. But this topic is starting to make me question whether I should be registered here. I don't think this is the place to be posting topics regarding a housemate of a friend and accusations of how they neglect.

All I'm interested in is the well being of the animals. The people here who care for them in the right ways. The people who don't, don't deserve the time or day. But I am not one to judge, as we do not know the full facts.

On the other factor, we do not know the circumstances of your or your friend relationship with this person. As I think you are playing with fire and may attract the wrong kind of reaction of many of us Snake lovers. You've asked for an opinion, although you have already made your mind up.

From reading your posts, the posts at RFUK look as if you are posting to demean another carer. Rather than post messages of neglected corns (and facts that change from post to post), just do something about it and avoid upsetting others and bringing the negative reaction here. This has sparked a reaction on the RFUK forums. Myself and others would like this to be avoided here, as this place has a much more respectful reputation.

As we can see the snakes are now being looked after, I suggest that you only post topics like this if its directly you with the issue as mis communication can cause confusion. You said on another thread the other day that your snakes were down to 750g but on this thread you say they are 800g I think that everyone reads things differently and swapping and changing statements from site to site and post to post is what give people chance to pick. I'm glad they are in better hands and hope that they are the best hand x

The only reason this was posted was because this friend of mine is not on the forum and wanted other peoples opinions so she asked me to post it. This topic can now be locked or deleted as the opinions she wanted have been given. I did not mean to upset anyone by posting this and neither did she, she just wanted your honest opinions as all she got from RFUK was that she was a spiteful person who shouldn't be around reptiles and that people were glad they weren't friends with... It really upset her and she wanted to know if everyone felt the same way which it has become obvious that not everyone does and that has cheered her up a lot. Georgina, Last time I weighed them they were at 750 grams but since then have eaten and I got my dates wrong and fed them more regularly than I was before so they put a bit of weight on rather than losing it hence why they have gone up again, plus they ate 3 days ago. A large mouse each.
