Hi,

I am new to the forum and to snake keeping. I have had Jasper, a hatchling Carolina Cornsnake for about 3 weeks now, and all is going well. He has fed every 5 days without any issues..and is just starting to go into blue :-)

His vivarium is set up with a heat mat over half of it under the glass bottom, and a thermostat and temp sensor ontop of the glass keeping things at the right temp.

The wires for the temp sensor and thermostat probe are lucking pretty ugly, they run down the side of the tank..and Jasper can move the sensor which in theory could make the temps go wrong.

My plan is to feed the cabling behind the ExoTerra background to hide the cables and then use a glue gun to hot glue the sensors to the glass floor so they are in constant contact.

My question is whether the hot glue gun will break the sensors. I hoping that despite the heat of the glue, if i use a small amount it would cool very quickly on the glass. I know i could use sealant, but i want something that will set very quickly so Jasper can be returned safely to his vivarium as quickly as possible with minimum fumes etc.

On an unrelated note, how quickly do cornsnakes grow? How old until he/she can be considered fully grown?

Thanks snake dudes..ive been lurking for a few weeks and your posts have been very very useful and made sure Jasper's home is perfect for him :)

Yeah glue guns are fine. Many of us use them to hold probes in place. Ages wise 4 to 6 but depends on growth rate an feeding etc.

I have a question regarding glue guns.

How long do you have to wait before putting the snake back in? Does it require a long period (48hrs or more) before being allowed to re-introduce the snake?

Nope once its cold. Its not like normal glue an mastics that cure by a evaporation of chemicals and solvents. It is purely heated to make it sticky and runny once cooled its back into the same chemical structure it was in stick form.

Thanks for the advice..looking forward to getting the Viv sorted.

Should I attempt to feed Jasper when he is in blue, or just leave him to it? I handled him yesterday and he was slightly jumpy but ok.

Thanks!

This is completely up to you. Some snakes eat while in blue and others won't. I tried with mine and they did not want to eat so now I don't bother trying until after they shed.

Yeah i am the same as Donnie, i tried feeding her once when she was in blue, she refused so i dont bother anymore. They can wait those extra few days.
