Our female hoggie had decided to stop feeding. I am assuming it is because of winter as she seems fine in all other ways though a little more grumpy. She weighs 106g and will be 1 year old in january and is still quite active. We put a light in for her 14 hours on 10 hours off, to up the ambients a little so it is now running at 26c in the cool side with a hot spot of 33c-34c but this has made no difference to her feeding. Her hot spot has always been at 33c-34c but we only put the light in recently. I have been told that she wants to brumate and thats that. I am very worried about doing this. Never done anything like this before. So.........
Should I turn the light off and just let her be leaving the heat mat on at 33c-34c and only offer food every 10 days or so?
Should I turn the heatmat stat down slightly to say 29c and not offer her food for 3 or 4 weeks?
Should I turn the heat mat down a lot lower gradually over the next few days so it adventually sits at 24c or something like that then bring it back up after a few weeks and not feed her at all until then?
The ambients with out a light in her viv will vary between 19c and 23c depending on time of day. And I guess a degree or two lower if the heat mat is turned down.
Please advise, my son and I just don't know what to do for the best never had this with my corns.  |

hey hun ,
Yep seems like shes ready to brumate . The thing is if your gona brumate its not as simple as just droppping the temps and not feeding . If you want to brumate , you need to stop offering food , and the leave it two weeks before dropping the temps right down to below 15C , keep fresh water in there but leave her in a dark place and just check her water each week , do this for about 8 weeks , then gradually raise the temps back up , leave a week and then offer food as normal .
If those temps cant be reached , it doesnt slow their digestive system down and so they are more at risk of loosing weight , whereas below 15c it doesnt stop them being active just slows them down and they rarely lose any weight at all .
If u cant get those temps , then i would leave things as they are , keep hot spot as normal and just offer food every 7 days as normal :) |

| Hero has not fed for 5 weeks. The vet ha said to have a lamp on 12 hours a day to recreate daylight and offer small meals once a week. The one thing j have learnt about Higgins is that they feed when they are good and ready. There's one woman on fb who's female hang fed for 12 months x |

Blimey thats a long while. The thing I am wondering is should we put the small light bulb on in her viv to up the ambients slightly now or should we leave her cool end and ambients low. They are hovering around 20c-21c at the moment and switching the bulb on gets the ambients up to around 26c. I know we should have got this all decided before winter but we told to let ambients and cool end to be room temp but have since been told this is to cold. :(
HELP
Just weighed her and she has lost 4g in less than a week. Can anyone make any suggestions? Would it be worth putting her back in her tub? She has been in her viv for a while now and has had 6 feeds whilst in the viv with no problems. Really not sure what is the best course of action. |

I know what you mean. I was all for leaving things alone and letting her just do what she wants and eat when she wants but now she is losing weight quickly. I have been told by others on another forum to brumate her but I have spoken to a good breeder of hognoses and he says he does not brumate anything unless they are 250g plus. I don't have anywhere cold enough to brumate Stevie so am now in a right muddle.
On a different subject did Midnight get to her new home ok? |

| Yes she did. She got there yesterday morning safe and sound. Have not heard anything but I'm sure she has settled in well. She was in deep blue so will hiding anyway. :) I think I'm going to try and up heros temps with a day time lamp to promote a cycle and j have moved him to the other side of the room where there is less light :( |

| Georgina - Don't know if this may be of help to you but I have just been speaking to the breeder and he has said to down size again even though she has been feeding fine in her viv. He says that he often has hognoses that have a delayed reaction to the viv size. Will feed fine for a few weeks/months then he has to move them back to a small tub because they stop feeding. Just thought it may be worth mentioning to you. I don't know what sort of set up you have for Hero. |

| I'd say hero is about 12" long and he is in a 10" square partition in an 18" monk field. He was in a 3l rub previous to this. I bought a lamp today and I'm gonna leave it on ten hours a day. And have put more of his heat mat in so its a tad warmer. He missed last night x |
