Last nite at work someone asked me what it is I like / love about keeping snakes as they said " well they dont do alot , you cant stroke them like a cat and they dont come to you when you call"

That all may be true , but i just find them truely fascinating! watching them eat with no hands! Shedding and the Shed cycle , the way they feel and the differences in character .

So what do you love about keeping snakes ?

I love the whole look of them, the way they move, their colours. And I just love Tanith's little face poking out of her hide.

I also kind of like the fact that we might own them and dictate where and how they live, but they only belong to themselves. We can't bribe them with treats or teach them tricks or buy their affection. They're always true to their nature and it does us good to have something that we can't manipulate. (This doesn't stop me thinking " Oh look, she's pleased to see me")

I love handling Tan as well, I find it very calming just watching her winding herself round my fingers.

It's gotta be those little faces :) I love that when i come in the room when shes exploring she comes to the front of the glass to see whats going on. I like that she doesn't bite, but is brave and curious, and any of my friends can pick her up and she's always chilled. I love the different personalities, colours, sizes. Really everything about them! :)

Despite what a lot of people out there may think - I definitely think they're cute! Before joining this forum I really thought I was the only person who goes "aaaawh!" at a baby snake :p
Someone said on here the other day that its like having the descovery channel live in your living room, and it so is. I have two hatchlings so loving watching them grow up, getting longer and fatter and seeing how their colours change with each shed. It will never cease to amaze me how they fit those mice into their mouths. And when they get old enough for breeding... God help me!

Everything!

I love watching them grow, their colours changing each shed. Watching them eat is something I will never get bored of. Watching them drink with their little cheeks puffing out, handling them which is so unlike any animal other than a snake and is so relaxing. How easy they are to look after, their individual personalities and quirks...everything! haha.

For me, it started by liking the feel of a corn snake... I went to Creepy Crawly show in Newton Abbot, many , many years ago, and saw someone selling corn snakes. He was holding this absolutely stunning normal ( or maybe okeetee ), really bright orange, and I admired the snake, so he let me hold it, and that was that, I was hooked. Unfortunately, because of circumstances, I couldn't have a snake then, but I never forgot and always looked at them in pet shops, and always said if I ever could have one, I would.
I like everything about them, the amazing colours, how they feel to handle, watching them, their cute faces watching me from under the aspen, their different personalities, they're anything but boring.
If someone says 'Why do you keep them, they don't do anything" I find t easiest to say " why do people keep fish? Same reason + you can handle a snake...

I'm pretty new to this world, but loving having Basil. He is so interesting, great to watch, and a brilliant photographic subject-I like trying to capture his key behaviours! Having a hatchie is great, I am really enjoying watching him change colour and grow. Plus as a biologist I find the genetics side of it pretty interesting (geek!)

I've been fascinated by snakes since I was a child playing with slow worms.. My boss recently found a baby one of those and it took restraint not to try and introduce it to my garden (it was tiny, about 3 or 4 inches in length and a gorgeous colour!)

But as others said, the way they move, the colour, the way face on Neidr looks like he's saying "ooooooh" ... I admit a little part of why I love them is the reaction from people...

Great comments guys keep them coming :) I just am fascinated and also love having a collection of different species , I can waffle on for hours about them provided people dont mind listening . I also think they dont really require much from you , unlike my staffy dog , i like watching peoples faces when i say i own a snake and like you have all said some of the colour changes . I had a caramel and watching her change from dark brown to buttery with each shed was just stunning!

All of the above and unknown to most, they do have quite a character once you get to know them. I think because they don't show emotion through expressions like mammals, people just don't understand them as well.

I can understand people's fear but then again I don't understand how people can't be slightly fascinated. They are very unusual. I am scares of spiders, but also extremely fascinated by them, so much so that I would l love a tarantula. Probably an odd approach I know!

I think you can tell a lot about someone if they have never held one but dive straight in and get involved. Bit indirect I guess, but I love how snakes reveal the more open minded of us!

I love to watch their natural behaviour and I find watching them eat absolutely fascinating. They are very calming to handle and even though they don't have emotions they defiantly have personalities. I have 3 different snakes with 3 very different behaviours! Inquisitive & Nosey, Calm and Friendly & A grump and master escapist! The colours are amazing though and especially the variety in corn snakes. 3 in my collection so far which is shortly increasing to 6!!!
