Hi peeps I am a very new at snake keeping and have a question.
I got 'scooby' home last week and left him for a few days to settle in however now whenever I open up the rub/viv he tries to slide away quite rapidly!! Is this normal? Will it get better the more I handle him? Not sure of his proper age as I took him off a customer of mine who decided they didnt like it so after some advice really.
I am not sure how much he has been handled in the past I just didnt want him to go to a shop to be resold so offered to take him!!
Glad I did now tho and fingers crossed he may learn to be less stressed and jittery??
Any help or advice would be great. Many thanks |

| Most snakes will settle down after being handled a bit more, and they also tend to get calmer as they age. When you say you left him to settle for a few days, how long is that? Most people here recommend a period of about 7 days :) |

| You should of let him settle for aweek but you can still do it. Try the rolled up sock kept close to the skin for 24hrs then put it into the viv and let him get used to the smell of you. Just do water change and poo checks for a week before trying to handle him. I got a 10mth old corn who was the same and after the sock trick I just sat near the rub with my hand inside until the nosy blighter started coming over and checking it out. They can be very flighty at first but they tend to settle down eventually. Good luck |

| Hatchlings are notoriously jittery ideally a week settling in with no feeding or handling is advised after purchase this allows the snake time to adjust and digest anything it may have eaten prior to purchase the sock trick works a treat but perserverence is the best advice i can give up dont let its bad behaviour put you off handling handle it regdardless and in time it will settle a few of mine have started as lil monsters but have now grown into perfectly placid corns lol |

It will take a while for him to settle down. Youngsters are notorious for being nervous and flighty, but then so would you if you were prey to others! Just keep handling on a regular basis and eventually e will calm down. It took one of mine best part of two years but now he's the one who comes to me most often for time together!  |

| I agree with all the info here, being little more than a brightly coloured worm, snakelings are very nervous and flighty. Once he gets bigger, and with regular handling, he will calm down nicely :) |

| My latest hatchling was the same, you only had to go near his rub, and he scarpered, but after a couple of weeks or so, he is much much better and braver, he is the only one out of my 4 young snakes that has bee like it, but they do settle :) |
