Hi Peeps, I live right next to to the woods and would love to collect a nice branch for my viv. The reason I want to collect my own wood is I can choose the ideal bit and also cut it to size. My viv is small so only a small branch is required.

So my questions are:

1. Can I cut a branch from a tree or is fallen better?
2. Do I have to take the bark off?
3. Any tree's to avoid?
4. How do I treat the wood? I thought about popping it in the oven!

Any other advice / tips are more then welcome

heres a link that lists some toxic plants and trees: http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2402 and heres a link for how to prepare wood: http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7285
think it would be easer to colect branches that have already fallen off. Hope that helps :-)

The only issue with collecting already fallen wood is that it may have picked up several potential critters you don't want in your viv.

Not that I'm trying to discourage the behaviour just it's something to lookout for.

It works out fine if you bake the wood in the oven at 200c for 25ish mins.
Make sure you wrap it in foil so it doesn't burn.
Cool it off then its nice and safe for snakey ^^
