Hi there

I am hopefully bringing home my 3 new babies on Tuesday next week and was wondering whether I should take them to be checked out by a vet?

I have always taken my animals (non-exotic) to the vet shortly after they come home for a check over and inoculations etc but wondered whether this was necessary for my corns?

Obviously, when I go to collect them, if I have concerns about the health of any of them (which would have to be significant as I am not experienced), I wouldn't buy them, but is it recommended?

Also if the seller doesn't know the sex of them, should I go and have them sexed professionally or does the sex not really affect the way I am keeping them?

Thanks in advance everyone :)

I wouldn't take them to the vet to be checked out, it'll just stress them out after the journey/ moving home, and really isn't necessary :-)There's no difference in keeping male and female, both need the same care and as long as you are keeping the babies separate there should be no problem.

I'd only take them to a vet if you have reason for concern (but then again, I probably wouldn't buy them in the first place :p)

I'm looking forward to taking some pics lol. I won't be taking them if I am even slightly concerned. As a new owner, I don't want to risk the 'Ah it'll be ok' route so I am intending to check for - no discharge, no sneezing or funny breathing, good condition skin, good movement (Anything else?)I'll get to see mum and dad and her set ups too. I am hoping the lady I am purchasing from will have feed/shed records etc. She has had several hatchings recently and has several pets (whom from conversation seem well cared for) so am assuming for now that all is well. Obviously this could change when I see them but fingers crossed! :o)

My babies are beautiful (pics on an intro thread) and I can't wait to bore all of my friends with pics on FB and talking about them lol, may need to hang out at my local exotic shop and pic up some new friends who I can rabbit at lol.

hehehe - you've found the right place to rabbit on about yr snakeys- everybody here is a bit funny that way...
(its one of the few places online you'll find extended in-depth discussions about reptilian poo...)
tbh i don't know how yr containing yrself with 3 babies waiting to be picked up- i'd probably be already camping on the breeder's doorstep by now- ... so exciting!

I'm taking my son to doncaster in a couple of weeks on the promise of one more baby, (cos none of our eggs made it in the end, *sniffle) and i can barely think about anyhting else- so yr not alone- i kn ow exactly how you feel!! woooo!!!
(slightly jealous of seeing snakey-baby parents, tho- that's always a Good Thing..) best of luck x

and you thought there was no such thing as a stupid question....

I was worried silly before we got our 1st snake, Curly, just over a year ago. Thanks to this fantasic forum and it's members, Curly is in bril condition, top health and growing at an alarming rate!
Follow the advice regarding choosing and caring for your snake and you should only need a specialist reptile vet if you have problems.
Enjoy your new snakey's !!!!
( Did I mention we came back from Kempton with 2 new babies? A male and a female normal phase, Betty and Barney and they are both beautiful and doing bril!.....:)....)

I just cannot believe how slowly this week is going! I am dying to go and get the babies and Tuesday can't come quickly enough!!! What's worse is the lady who I am buying from also has a pregnant doggie, who is due any day, so if my collection happens to coincide with her trip with pups to the vet....I will have to wait even longer!!

I really hope they don't escape as I am going to be using the train for transport to and from (not far but I don't drive) so explaining that to SouthEastern could be a wee bit tricky lol I am planning on using rubber banded pillow cases placed into a rub with holes in.

The other thing I am struggling with is not spending a fortune of flashy bits for them. I have decided on rubs for now (all set up now) and to slowly get the better quality bits and pieces while they are growing.

Restraint is difficult.

Ooooh good luck for Tuesday, I'd be so excited if I was getting 3 new babies lol! As above, just make sure you keep them all separately, at least until a lot older :)

The night before the day in question!! I am just about fit to burst at the moment, I don't remember being this nervous waiting for the birth of my children lol I will have them by lunchtime tomorrow!

Just thinking, are pillow cases a little bit overkill, I mean these are hatchlings. Maybe I should be spending my pent up energy on sewing them little pockets lol Would they be ok in separate small rubs with air holes? Might take up to two hours to get them home and in their warm beds. Anything else I should do?

I am so, nervous lol
