Hi all I'm Carl,
I've been posting a few times already, gathering info and stuff but today finally managed to get hold of the little thing.
I ended up going to the Repitle shop I mentioned in an earlier post, and was quite surprised by the owners advice saying that she doesn't recommend heat mats (and if you do a stat isn't needed as they never get that high) also that the room temperature in the cool end will be too low, her cool end is at 28C :S
But anyway on to the snakes, there was quite a few to choose from but the one that really caught my attention was an Amel with it's bright colours, I made sure to handle it (not sure what sex but am going with female) and she seemed alert and active, nice and strong and in generally good health.
I do have a few questions though, for the first few hours she mainly stayed curled up in the corner under the fern just moving her head slightly from time to time and wanted to know if this is normal.
Recently though she has been busy climbing on the fern but still not entered either hide and also hasn't ventured to the cool end yet.
And finally I've located her first poop which is just on the side of the green hide under the suction pad as seen in the pic and was unsure about removing it and putting a clean towel down without distressing her too much as it's quite fiddly moving things around. |

She's very pretty. Don't worry about her not moving around much at first, it is probably very scary for her to have moved into her new home with new smells, new furniture and the car journey etc.
Ugh, petshops. 28 degrees is a suitable hot end temperature not a cold end one :S Makes me wonder how hot her hot end it. Ooh er. And stats are definitely essential as mats can get too hot... |

Your little one is adorable, so glad you know how important a mat/stat is. Makes me so mad when petshops do that. Mick had that comment spot on. |

Just a quick update since last posting, she has visited the warm hide and then I spotted her slowly sneaking into the cool one where I saw again her this morning so hopefully seems like she's settling in.
Now just hoping she finds the water.
Thanks for the welcomes. |

Welcome to the forum! I often wonder why shops always never mention stats...you would have thought they would have liked the extra money? |

Welcome! Btw, I'd probalby cut that kitchen roll in half, I've noticed they're a lot more comfortable on a flat surface than the round inside of the roll ^^ |

Yeah you're probably right tbh as since posting this I haven't seen her near the whole rolls (although don't watch her 24/7 lol) plus it'll make em last longer which is handy. |

Hi and welcome, I bet when your sleeping she is all over the place exploring :) one of mine often sits outside the hides, as long as there is plenty of cover, don't worry about, as for the toilet rolls, I find crushing them at the ends with little peek holes works well, I too was worried about my snakes not finding their water, but they do :D |

Whenever I put a snake into a viv for the first time, I put them with their heads right over the water. Sometimes they'll have a drink straight away (while I'm still holding them) but even if they don't, at least they'll know where the water is ^^ |

Another update, since the first couple of nervous starting days she has become much more active and seemingly more confident and pretty much like clockwork once the sun sets and the room gets dark (lights turned off) she's up and roaming, climbing over everything and almost every time I go in the room she has squeezed herself between the glass lid and a small plastic lip clearly trying to escape but as of yet she hasn't found any viable options .
And on the water she has been seen draped over the bowl so presumably has taken a sip or two along the way.
Still dying to handle her but giving her the full week to settle with first feed by me due on Saturday. |
