Hi All,

I'm a pre-newbie (I don't have a snake yet), and I'm doing a lot of research before getting my Corn Snake. I have picked up so much information from this site. Thanks to everyone who takes the time to help.

I'm a DIYer so I'm making my vivarium from a disused flat pack chest of drawers. I've cut it down so that it is not too tall, but it's too big for a hatchling so I thought, if I got a small aquarium and wrapped a picture around three sides, I could keep the tank inside the big viv and she would still feel safe. Does that sound ok to you?

Another question is, why do you have to take the snake out of the viv for feeding? My sister has a Californian King Snake and she feeds inside the viv. I have a large flat piece of slate so I thought if I fed her at one end on that and entered the viv for handling/ water changing from the other end, she would get to know the difference and not strike me. My worry is that she will regurgitate when I put her back.

Thanks for reading. Any advice will be gratefully received.

Welcome!
I would have thought that the viv you suggest sounds fine, just make sure that there are no escape points for the snake to use (they can squeeze through very small gaps).

You don't have to take the snake out of the viv to feed, some do, others dont. The snake is unlikely to regurge from picking him up and putting back in the viv, its more that they will regurge when stressed out (i.e. lots of handling just after they have fed).

I've used a mixture of methods, in the past I've usually fed outside the viv, except when the snake is a hatchling; although one of my snakes will only eat in the viv so that's what I do..

Thanks Jono, I'm sure there will be many more questions once we're up and running. I'll post some pics when I can.

Welcome! I'm new here too :)

Some people like to take their snake out of the viv for feeding to reduce the risk of the snake accidentally swallowing substrate and too prevent it associating the viv being opened with food.

I used to feed mine inside the viv but I used a large feeding mat to do this. I knew my snake well though and although she was a very keen feeder (would always strike and coil, usually quite aggressively) she never dragged the food around. If she started dragging it from the mat then I probably would have started feeding her outside. She never confused feeding with handling either, and in ten years didn't strike at me once.
I suppose its about getting to know your snake really :)

Heya ^^
Welcome to the forum!

The viv idea sounds good :)
I always feed my guys outside the viv just so they never associate my opening the viv with their getting food.
When its time for them to go back in, I just tip their feeding box against the viv and they slither back in themselves :>
