Hi,I got my first corn snake nearly two weeks ago and I am smitten. I've called him Arthur (don't know why!) and he could be a she ;-) He seems to have settled really well, so far. Has fed twice .... greedy little chap. I think he is about a year old according to the girl I got him off. Couple of questions..........at what age to do you move from feeding them pinkies to fluffies (could be the wrong term:-))?? Is a heat mat ok or do you recommend a heat lamp??? at mo I have the tank set up on a heat mat which is under about a third of his tank where his hide is (he has artificial plant on the cool side which he like sto sleep under) At what age would you recommend using a form of substrate? at mo I am using kitchen paper. Now this might be a stupid question..................can a snake get to recognise your scent??
I love my Arthur and I have found this forum very useful so far. |

Hi and welcome,
congrats on your new snakie, pics are a must here :-)
to answer your questions food items are judged on size of snake and food item rather than the age of the snake. the ruke is that the item offered should be 1 1/2 the widest part of the snake and should leave a noticable bump,
heat matt is fine to use but should be run using a thermostat to ensure that the correct temps are maintained. with regard to substrate i personally have got mine on cage carpet and plan on keeping them on that. sustrate is mainly avoided with small hatchies as it can be difficult to find their poo, but once they are a bit bigger most people move on to a substrate such as the aspen or beach chippings.
they can learn to reconise your scent, many people on here have used the scented sock trick to help a new corn get used to them hope that helps any other questions just ask :-) |

Welcome to the forum, I agree with lupi regarding feeding but would suggest at a year old he really should have moved up from pinkies, if it's any help my yearlings are on medium mice every 7 days and with some of these there's not much of a bump. |

Welcome to the forum.
As for the substrate question, mine all start off kitchen roll so I can monitor poops. When I'm happy all are feeding well I move them onto Aspen(which they all love). |

Hello and welcome to the forum. As people have said it depends on the size of the snake with regards to feeding, for example my snakey is coming up to a year old and he's on 2 fluffs a week. A heat mat is just fine as long as it's attached to a thermostat, they seem to be the most popular choice Good luck with your new snakey and Arthur is a great name! |
