That's why I'm still wanting to stick it out, but my other two couldn't really give a dam!
His set up is perfect - 28 degrees started breeding tub with plenty of hides for him. |

Yeah I have done in the past by just grabbing him quickly. I think I've lost my nerve now though :-( |

No not at all. I've had snakes for a year now and never had a problem. When I've handled him previously I've had to have a grip on him as he's a jumper. It's getting him out that's the problem :-( |

So is he just moving away from you quickly when you try and pick him up or is he striking at you? |

He's moving away at the speed of light, whipping his tail and he went for me ten minutes ago. |

Try putting a glove on. Obviously not a really thick one you want to be able to hold the snake without having to nip it. Perhaps a cotton glove? It will give you more confidence in that if he strikes he is not going to make contact with your skin. And it may put him at ease. My adult hated the feel of my skin on his but he eventually came round. Has he always been this way or has it started since you got a new snake maybe? Have you tried the sock method? |

Tricky, the glove idea is definantly a good one. A friend of mine had a nervous king snake and found that using a certain scent of soap before handling worked after a time as he got used to it.
What I would probly try is to take off todays sock and leave it in there with him overnight, do this with a fresh sock each day for a week and he will get used to your smell then try handling him again. Dont try to grab him first off, just put your hand in palm down and let him come to you.
Patience and perserverance is the key! |

I think I might try the sock trick(even though he's been with me a few weeks now).
I don't want to give up on him :-( |

He could still be settling in and getting use to the new scents he is picking up on. Some take longer than others to settle. Like you say you don't want to give up on him. |

Would it be worth changing his substrate?
At the shop he was on wood chipping and now he's on kitchen roll so I can monitor his poops(which are fine) |

If you have always had him on kitchen towel then I think I would keep to kitchen towel rather than changing things and risk upsetting him more :) |

I can relate to this, Neidr was about 8 months old when I got him, he's effectively a teddy bear, he has never struck me or rattled his tail. Nyoka however is an eye opener! She is about 2 months old. She struck me 5 times and attempted to swallow me in the shop (was very hungry!) She is very difficult to get out of her rub and will quite happily launch 90% of her body away from me. I was starting to get upset about it all, so I popped on some latex gloves and handled her that way. She was by no means happy but she didn't bite and she did settle down to a degree. Mind you I week I touch pretty much anything if I have gloves to protect me so I think that helps too (yeah I know it's weird) I did the sock thing when I first got her and despite her using the sock as a hide, it made little difference to her opinion of me. |
