Hiya and welcome setup cost will depend greatly on wether you want to buy a hatchling/yearling/adult im still torn on this haha hatchlings are cool you get to watch them grow and bond with them as they do so but are fidgets and then u have to get them into a good feeding regime a yearling is a good idsea if you dont feel confident to handle a hatchling or obviously you can just go ahead and buy an adult a heatmat and thermsotat will probably cost you between 35-50 for the two items then its a case of adding substrate acessories and housing most people keep hatchlings and yearlings in RUBS (really usefull boxes) then move them into a viv later

My set up cost me £40. That paid for all the heating equipment and the substrate. I did initially use kitchen roll but that £40 includes the price of beech chips if I'd bought them straight away.
The "viv" was free as I already had a plastic tub with a lid.
The snake housing and water bowl were also free as I used things I already had, and then when I upgraded it was to items I got for free with my snake! (Bit of a bonus there).
I spent less than £3 on some vines from Dunelm Mill.
Half a year's worth of food cost me £11 but that was for fluffs. A hatchling will only need pinkies.

My corn snake was a yearling and a rarer morph (pewter), so was £40. They can be half or even a quarter of this price. However your sons may enjoy a yearling or older sized snake for easier enjoyment.

Hope this helps, and welcome to the forum!

Hello and welcome

Corns make great pets!
Setup cost really depends on how fancy you want to go, where you shop and how old/big the snake you're getting is
You'd need an enclosure, heat mat, thermostat and thermometer - hides, decor, substrate and bowls etc could be almost anything lying around the house lol!

As others have said, set up costs can vary depending on what you want. Some one here has a great set up for a one corn at a bargin price of £45 if it's still available: http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25180

I have 2 of these vivs (terrariums) and have 2 month old corns living in them. Seeing as the vivs cost £35 each new the deal above is great. As for snakes, buy from a breeder and you are looking at £25+ depending on the morph. In a pet store you are looking at £40+ as they need to make a profit.

My 3ft setup cost: Viv- £45 (seapets), Heat mat- £10 (shop), thermostat- 25(seapets), digital thermometer- 2.75(eBay), Aspen- 4.79(petshop) and hides/bowls decor is randomly sourced from household items/charity shops etc.
Plus the cost of your snake!
I got my set up sorted ready for the snake before they came along, this why I managed to sort out the temps properly and could make sure there were no problems!

Hi and welcome, looks like you have all the advice on set up costs,
All three of mine have been hatchlings and it is great watching them grow, this will meen expanding homes as the snake grows so this increases the cost, it also leaves empty homes that then need filling, beware this is so good it becomes highly addictive.

OH was not interested in reptiles now she is nearly as mad for them as me, if you are going to cure your hubby then a corn snake is a great way to start.

we took a trip to a localish exotic petshop and they quoted me 40 for a hatchling(tiny and bloody fast!) and 50 for a faunarium setup including substrate and food for 1 month does that sound fair it was warrington pets and exotics if anyones interestd lol. beginning to think just for speed a yearling might be better haha. dont mind paying a little more for the faun/viv to look nice because LeBron as said snake is alrady named by my 3 yr old is going to live in the lounge

what are cats like with snakes lol i have a 7 yr old tom called Slash :)

LeBron? whats that from? my cat love watching Kellogs in the viv, but loses interest when she is out, but she is not really a hunter, can put snake on floor/bed when she is about, i just keep a very close eye on her, she even headbuts the snake in greeting lol
