So, I had 7 perfectly healthy hatchlings, but the last egg wouldn't hatch. After giving it 2 more weeks, we decided to open the egg and see what's inside. Sadly, we found a dead hatchling. It appears that the poor thing had gastroschisis (when the stomach doesn't close up correctly). I'm wondering if the snake had some sort of genetic defect - its markings look very different from its siblings as well.
I'll just put links instead of the actual pictures as I don't want to shock anyone with pictures of intestines and such.

Could be that he couldn't pip and died, and then his stomach exploded due to built up gases? |

Saphira's fine - she's already put all the weight back on :). All the hatchies but 2 of them have already eaten, and all of them had a good shed, so the future's looking bright for them.
As for the exploded stomach - not sure that's the case. Does anyone have any experience with those things? |

One of my hatchlings died in the egg, I think that was a case of couldn't pip properly, when exhumed from the egg was perfectly formed but looked like it had started rotting in the same area where yours is exposed :(
The one that has hatched seems to have a defect, but is active so far. And I have one egg left to hatch.
Sorry for the outcome on this, but glad mother and other babies are doing well! |
