I have an old Kingsnake, Trio, he's 18 now, and for the first 14 years of his life he didn't have an easy one, to the point where he tried eating himself and started to digest his own tail.
Since I've had him, he's gone from strength to strength, with some small issues along the way that have been treated as and when they appear.

Over the last couple of weeks his scales have become very rough and 'tenting' when he moves.
I'll attach a couple pics to show roughly what he looked like, aside from those that know, can anyone hazard a guess as to what is wrong with him??

For the record, I know whats wrong with him, I just thought this might make an interesting thread. :)

/ninja edit
The photos don't actually show how bad it is/was.

At a wild guess, incomplete shedding of the old skin from the new. 'Double skin'.

As you seem to be more in the know, can you throw any light on the 'stripes' on Fester? Just got him as a rehomer.

On second look at your photo, I see the tenting on the inner bend now. Fester has similar but not quite as extreme.

I'm sorry I can't help with Trio, but with Fester, my corn had those and I was told it was because she's rather chunky and when she curls up her scales crease. It happens with my boa on his tail end too (though he's not too chunky).

Oooh, weird. I'll be interested to find out what is wrong with him. I'm still quite inexperienced with snakes but I would think maybe not shed skin or dehydration?

I came into work the other day with a very crinkly Milksnake, as he'd gone to shed, but had only gotten the nose scales off, and needed me to take the entire shed off by hand, and he looked like that, so thats my guess!

Fester is a portly fella. lol.

I'd have gone with retained shed off the bat but knowing that you are out of catch us out with some knowledge we dont have I'm thinking maybe some other force is at play.

It is a king snake though, did it eat a magic tree?

Bob,I just weighed and measured Fester after a perfect shed. The shed skin was 63", 'string' method as near as I could get was 53"-ish as he's as he's pretty active and quick. He weighed in at 825 grams. I can't say that he's porky but certainly solid and well built.

Trio is fine and well, up to no good whatsoever and doing his best to get jiggy with anything remotely female.
The Girlf recently found out not to hold a female king and then him shortly afterwards. Lovebites on the arm from Trio.

Still not saying anything about it, yet..............

Second guess, still on the lines of a partial shed gone wrong.

The shed has only partially released and the old scales have fused together on top of the new. This would prevent the underlying scales to slide over each other and would cause the 'tenting' on the inside of the coil.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Could you try giving Trio a powerade bath? If suspicions are retained shed or dehydration, that might help in both cases?

He had a couple of powerade baths, then the standard run through a warm damp towel, it made no odds, just made him shinier for a day or 2.

Now maybe to throw an extra bit of confusion into it all..........

He stunk like the dead warmed up in the last 3-4 days of having this issue..

Has anyone gotten close yet?? Maybe, maybe not..

Has he coiled round something for a while in naughty mood and caused a circulation problem heat building in that area. A bit like feet in trainers causing the smell.
