Hi :) apparently there is no such thing as a stupid question so I'll ask one.

I have set up my new vivs for my babies who are coming home to me next week. I have stats and mats set up and digital thermometers. I know i need to keep the warm end of the viv around 29degs. So here's my question - i get a max and min reading off my termometers and the temp at the warm end fluctuates betwee 27degs and 33 degs as when the stat is on the mat heats up (to 33degs), mat hits temperature and switches off mat, mat cools down so temp drops (to approx 27degs).

Does this sound ok to you guys as you have far more experience than me, i just want my snake homes to be ok for the new arrivals.

Thanks

33 degrees is too high, it should be 27 - 30 tho i don't like to go over 29 (thats just personal preference), try turning your stat down:)

if i turn the stat down the temps vary between 24 and 30. There always seems to be a 6degree gap between min and max temps recorded

That's alot of variation even for an on/off stat. How do you have it all set up.

Heat mat is under a sheet of glass (Monkfield terrarium) stat probe and termometer probe are together on top of the glass ubove the centre of the mat. The stat was originally set at 29degs which gave me my original results so I assumed that the variation between 27 and 33 degs meant the average would be 30 degs (halfway between the 2 temp measurements). I set it up based on images and threads on here regarding best places to put stat probes and thermometers. They are exo terra thermometers and from what i've read on here they aren't always the most reliable.

i get a good 5-6 degree variation with my stat i know that it shouldnt go above 30c
i think most stats do tend to fluctuate abit
someone with more experience can probably say more than i can but aslong as your on the lower side of 30 you should be ok

cool, I'll adjust until the thermometer doesn't read over 30. i was just worried that it might get too cold during the 'cool down phase' before the stat kicks the mat back in to life.

Yes they do have 2 sheets of glass, the matt is sandwiched between them as it should be.

right, the temp just hit 30degs and i tweeked the stat a tiny amount so that it switched off. Just have to wait and see how low it goes before it kicks in again.

Out of interest, what would you recommend as the most accurate thermometer just in case it is the exo terra's not being accurate?

I had a thought, I have an infra red temp gun that i use for tuning Nitro RC cars and monitoring engine temps. I just took a reading in the viv and although the digital thermometer read about 27.5 the infrared had it pegged at 28.6

I need to leave it alone for the night now and I'll try more infra red readings in the morning. I keep opening up the viv so it's losing heat more quickly that would usually be retained if it was kept closed.

Simple answer is to get a pulse stat, far more sensitive and only vary by around 0.2 of a degree, do agree with a33 that's a lot of variation.

Those on/off stats are like that anyway - ours are set so they don't go over 29degrees but they drop to ~25 before they kick in again. Also I found out (after advice from someone on the forums here) that every time you move them they change settings slightly and will take a few days to settle back down again.

We have our digital thermometers visible all the time in all our vivs, very handy if we knock the stat a bit or the weather changes and the flat gets warmer/cooler.

We do have a digital on/off stat as well, which allows us to set how many degrees the temperature can drop before it turns on again, it's very handy and has an alarm if the temperature goes too high or too low. It did cost quite a bit more than the standard ones, but it was all the shop had when we needed one urgently.

I have all mine in monkfield vivs, I use lucky rep mats and habistat mat stats and mine never flucuate more than a degree. If your viv is by a door or a window it can affect the mats a stats. X
