Hi everyone. My name is Jen, I'm from Suffolk, and I want to enter the world of corn snakes :)

I've loved snakes since I was young and can remember always being desperate for an albino burmese python. Perhaps an odd ambition for a young girl and I'm still very taken with them now at 27.

Anyway, I did the whole "best first snake as pet", and amongst a few others I got the humble corn snake as a suggestion. I looked at some pictures and read a few care sheets and reckoned I could handle it. Then I came across corn snake genetics and I completely fell in love! This is what totally sets them apart from the other snakes suggested to me, as I am so into stuff like this. The idea of obtaining corn snakes to love and care for, who are very rewarding, who ALSO can be part of an amazing rainbow breeding program sounds like heaven to me.

Initially I just want to obtain one or two snakes to enjoy along with my young son though. So I'm still learning about their care and the costs involved whilst also on the hunt for those first snakes. I've visited a couple of stores in Suffolk (Stonham Barns and Needham Market), and I've checked out some adverts on Preloved, but I'm a bit wary about buying from across the internet if you know what I mean. Do many people do that? Do you know of any breeders to look out for who advertise on sites like that? What are realistic prices for corn snake hatchlings, as the reptile stores had them around the £50 mark, but the same snakes are going on the Preloved ads for around £20 - £30. Is that just to undercut the stores to secure sales?

The guy in Needham Market said he could try and source some morphs I liked and I do love the grey ones. Not just anery, but all types of grey. Thing is, do I go for one from him and pay twice as much as a Preloved advert. I'm so unsure. Could you advise?

Thanks. And I look forward to learning more and more from yourselves :)

Jen.

Oh, I just wanted to add that I have other pets too. Four related cats named Osiris (longhair tabby), Satyr (shorthair tabby), Phoenix (longhair ginger) and Thea (black shorthair). And our more recent addition is a blue ex-racing greyhound called Maccus.

Hello and welcome!

I get most of my snakes from ads on the internet! The good thing about preloved is that theres no payment option there online, so you can always go and check out the animals before handing over money etc
Pet shops are usually a lot more expensive than breeders purely as they have to make a profit to keep running! Feeding animals, shop rent, other stock...

What you go for is totally up to you!

hi Jen and welcome to the forum, good luck choosing a snake, my own advice would be try to see the snake first and handle it, really get a feel for what your buying. i dont have experience from buying from a shop, but thats mainly because i'm not keen on the shops where i am.

Hi Jen, and welcome :) If you are off tomorrow, get yourself over to the EHS reptile show!!!! It's at the Norfolk showground (by Costessy park and ride). There will be loads of morphs there at breeder prices, I'm going, been excited about it for a few weeks ever since I got it confirmed I could have the day off!

Thanks for all the warm welcomes guys.

Wow, just anyone can go to that show in Norfolk? A guy at the Needham Market reptile shop told me to let him know of any morphs I was interest in as he was going "to some show" on Sunday. Maybe I'll go and check it out for myself! I've been given a budget by the other half for my initial set up (the heat mat, thermostat and thermometer) and my snakes, so maybe I'll find some good deals on lovely snakes.
