Hello,
Me and my boyfriend bought a yearling yesterday but we can't seem to get the tank gradient right, the 'cool' side is about 25c and the warm side is about 28c, we have one heat mat on the floor on the outside of the tank, and one adjacent to it on the inside. It's also cooled down by about 2c since yesterday...
Can anybody help please?:)
Thanks! |

You only need one heat mat that must be controlled by a thermostat and the mat should only cover between 1/3 and 1/2 of the floor space. Can you post any pictures of your setup? |

I could if I knew how - I'm on my phone and it says you need an URL :/
We started off with just the one heat mat on the outside of the tank on the floor, but the temperature seemed to have been stuck on 26-27c, so we put another mat on the inside vertically next to it, checked the temperatures this morning and it says the above... |

When you say tank, is it a glass 'tank' like a fish tank, or a glass 'tank' like with doors on the front. Or is it a wooden vivarium with the glass sliding doors in the front, or a plastic tub (faunarium)?
Do you have a thermostat? How/with what are you measuring the temperatures?
A hot end temp of 26-27oC sound about right to me, the aim is 28oC as a starter temp but watching my snake's behaviour you tweek it and my snake likes his hot spot at 27oC but each snake is different as you tweek it according to your own snakes needs. |

Where and what type of thermometer are you measuring the temps and have you got a thermostat? |

No we're not using a thermostat and we're measuring it on a digital thermometer. The tank is all glass. Is a thermostat our best bet then? |

Thermostat is an essential piece of kit to use with any source of heat(even if you say its not getting up to temperature).
You say your using a digital thermometer, but where is the probe exactly? |

i would turn all heat sources off. if the ambient temp is 25 it will be seriously hotter on the surface. get yourself a stat, you will never need that mat on the side.
whe you get your stat, get a rubber bad and tie the stat probe and the digital probe together and wedge them under the hid, in contact with the glass at in the middle of the mat that is underneath the tank. |

also the light will create heat aswel. fish tanks arnt always the best for snakes and they are hard to make escape proof.
another thing plant pots can be sharp and they can get stuck in the holes.
and make sure there is nothing sticky, like tape.

If your getting 28 - 31 try and drop the temp a few degrees to keep it under 30 :-) |
