I'm thinking about getting either a GTP or ETB.
Not any time soon; I've got a few more corn snake related things I would like, but I really fancy a smallish boid to keep, something a bit different...
At the moment I'm leaning towards the Emerald Tree Boa.
I prefer the markings on these over the Python, and that face!
And as both animals require roughly the same care, and reach the same size, does anybody keep these? And what are they like?
Cheers! |

Have you considered a Amazon Tree Boa, they are like the beginner species of these type of snake. With the GTP being at the opposite end of the scale - very aggressive, very expensive and a very fragile spine so no handling. I got a ATB from donny last year, after a few teething problems I got everything set up right and he's doing great, they are still usually aggressive (mine isnt that bad to be honest) but affordable and very easy to keep, I woudnt even consider the other options any time soon. |

I'm pretty sure an Amazon Tree Boa and an Emerald Tree Boa are the same thing, just different locals. But thanks for the reply! I really like the look of the boa more! |

ETB = Corallus caninus ATB = Corallus hortulanus
Similar but not the same.
I would love a GTP and an ETB, they are awesome animals, but because they are delicate when they are little they dont get used to being handled which makes them more likely to be aggressive (plus they have a little bit of evil in them lol) as an adult. You can handle them if you are careful once they are a bit bigger but you really wouldn't want to pick them up with anything other than a hook as they can both deliver medically significant bites, specially the ETB whos teeth are enormous. I have plans for a GTP next year, just designing an all glass extension for my stack thats not going to look like Gary Schofield has left his cube round mine. If you do your research and have the setup running correctly before you get one in then you should be laughing, you can keep babies in RUBs too, seems quite common practice but not sure how mat heating a arboreal snake works but I'll figure it out. |

So there is a difference between the ETB and ATB!
I was planning on keeping one as a display animal, starting them off in a glass exo terra cube, and a AX24 as a final viv.
Still working on how to heat them, but I'm swayed towards a repti-rad because of the humidity and daily spraying (light fittings and water dont mix well!), and controlling that with a pulse stat. I'm going to put a 5% UVA tube with waterproof fittings in to give a daily photo-period and to show off the colours as well. |
