Hi! I'm Mike from Bradford and am on the verge of buying my first snake.

At the weekend my daughter (who loves all animals and fluffy things) asked out of the blue 'Daddy. Can we have a cornsnake?'. It kind of threw me because I had been thinking about it, but never mentioned it.

So I've been reading up and looking at pictures and I think I will get one. But before I do, I have a question.

What do you know now that you wished you knew when you got your first snake?

Good answer. I've spoken to a couple of friends and they've not really been able to give me any reason NOT to get one. Apart from my dad who said my mum will be upset because of what I'll need to feed them. (I'm 42 btw, not a teenager!)

Hello and welcome!

Definitely agree with the addiction thing haha!
Personally (...but obviously i'm a snake keeper so it might not count lol!) i dont see the issue with feeding at all. The vast majority of corns will take frozen/thawed prey with no trouble... i dont see much difference there between a frozen mouse and a frozen fish or chicken!

Hi and welcome,

I thought of an answer, I wish I knew that shops are a hell of a lot dearer than breeders and they often don't sell the right equipment to you, so do your reasearch get everything ready and track down a local breeder. And deffinately agree with the addiction thing, this time last year I just had 1 corn and 3 crested geckos, now I have 17 various species of exotics.

* 2.1 Corn Snakes (Arthas - Normal, Tilion - Anery Lav, Yavanna - Stripe) * 1.1 Cape House Snake (Jenson & Ginetta) * 1.0 Carpet Python (Irian Jaya Jag - Grantly) *
* 1.0 Amazon Tree Boa (Omen) * 1.1.2 Crested Geckos (Brindle, Harley, Noumea & Farino) * 0.0.2 Gargoyle Geckos (Pazuzu & Vesper) *
* 0.0.1 Mexican Red Leg Tarantula (Aragog) * 1.1 Leopard Geckos (Kara & Darwin) * 1.0 Dog (Labrador - Barney) * 1.0 Cat (Casper) *
* 1.0 Western Hognose (Hamilton) * 1.0 Apricot Pueblan Milk Snake (Tweek) * 0.0.2 Common Musk Turtles (Erin & Ira) *

Good tip with the breeders. I've not looked into that yet. My local pet shop sells frozen pinkies for 40p each, up to small rats at 90p. The cornsnakes themselves are £45.

You're right about the frozen fish or chicken. That's exactly how I've been thinking about it.

I do have 16 other pets. They are 15 tropical fish and one cat. Not exactly in the same league as snakes though.

I would definately agree with the addiction. Be prepared to want more and get more. I promise, you will not stop at 1or 2. I thought 2 was enough then i got 4 & 5. Now i have 6 & 7 . if my ghost lays fertile eggs im hoping to get a coral snow motley female to keep and next year im going for royal pythons aswell. o be prepared.
Also i wish i new how many morphs there was. Then maybe i would have stopped the addiction before it started lol.

Hi and welcome.

Ive found that if you put them into a warm bath every couple of days, they tend to poop in there! It saves cleaning them out as often

I told Amelia tonight that we are going to get one. She's well chuffed. I just need to read up and look for a vivarium, and then look into breeders in the Yorkshire area.

Not many like being in the bath though, can freak them out, even if it is easier to clean, and get rid of that stink!

Welcome to the forum.

I wish I knew how fantastic cornsnakes are so I would have bought one sooner! Ooh, also, I wish I knew how much cheaper (with much more choice) hatchlings are if you buy from a show like the doncaster show. Not that I would want to change Apollo now I have her :)
