It is perfectly normal for them to hide away. It could be that he is out and about at night when it's quietest. If your set-up is correct then I wouldn't worry too much, give him a week with no handling then start with just very short handling sessions. He will soon get used to you. You could put a sock, glove, hanky etc with your smell on it into his viv so that he gets used to your smell.

Where do l get a thermostat?
He's about 30cm and the tank is 35 x 25 cms there abouts. Thats what i was recommended to get?
Jeez i feel stupid now but took the advice of the people in the shop.
I know he's moving about at some point cause he's happily moving between the 2 hiding houses.
So whats my best plan.
Sorry if l'm coming accross as stupid, want him to be happy and thrive!
thanks for all the help!

The size of your tank is fine for a while. As said you need a thermostat and can usually pick them up from a pet shop that sells reptiles or order online. You will need a digital thermometer as well to monitor the temps. The dial and strip thermometers are not good enough. There is a helpful sticky that will be worth a read before you go shopping just incase you decide you need something else.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Congrats on your new snakey and don't worry, shops nearly always give bad advice lol! As above I'd turn the mat off until you've got a stat, but also make sure you don't feed the snake until you have one as they need the warmer temps to help them digest. Corns are all different - some are very active others hide away and are shy. Once your week settling in time has passed just start handling 5 mins or so every night (leave for 48hrs after feeding though) and he will get used to you soon enough :)

I grew up with snakes as my Dad always kept them when i was wee, and unfortunately he's not around to ask for advice!
Sooooooooo ..............
We got Ace on Monday, we handled him a few times after that, should i give him a full week now of no handling to settle him in? Also should i feed him tomorrow? If not then when? Have got a thermostated heat mat ordered. Poor wee chap, ahhh well at least we know now!

Welcome to the forum.

If you already have a heat mat then you only need to order a thermostat like this one
http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/habistat-mat-stat-thermostat-100w.html
I use these for my mats and they are super reliable and accurate and you can chop and change mat sizes without having to buy whole new stats.

One thing is it advisable that you turn off the heat mat you have, specially as its in with the snake, its just not worth the risk no matter how small that the snake may get burnt. Don't worry about him getting cold, corn snakes are pretty much bullet proof and the temperature this time of year is just fine for them, the only thing you cant do while the heat is off is feed him, they need a bit of heat to help digestion but luckily snakes can go ages without food and not even notice so a week of not feeding wont do any harm at all.

Corns are most active and dawn and dusk (official name is they are crepuscular) through the day you may catch them having a wander but mainly they do all their exploring at twilight. As your snake is new it is possible he is actually waiting until night when everyone is in bed and its quiet to do his exploring and once he gets to know his surroundings may get braver when people are around. You'll soon have a snake rattling the glass doors wanting you to open the door for them.

There is one absolutely vital thing you MUST do!!! Post some pictures

Anery Corn snake SPOT. Royal Python, DUKE. Hogg Island Boa, SANKE. Albino House Snake, HAL.
Harlequin Crested Gecko HARLEY
Albino Horned Frog WAKA
Chilean Rose Tarantula TRIXIE. Brazilian Salmon Pink Bird-eating Tarantula SAM. Orange Baboon Tarantula BORIS.
Giant Asian Forest Scorpion, SALLY.
Giant African Land Snails, SHELDON & MICHELLE.
Budwing Mantis, MAIA

Shall i get the link of a rub which has been completely melted due to overheating?

I strongly advise you turn the Matt off until you get a stat and thermometer.

That'd be down to a faulty mat surely?
wouldn't the fuse would blow in the plug before that in normal circumstances?

I cannot find that one quickly but the picture at the start of this thread should be enough of a reason to switch the mat off now
