We have had our amber corn snake Jaspar for 5 months now. He is 6 months old and has been doing fine except for one regurgitation episode. When we took him out of his house tonight we found him to be quite lethargic, very little tongue flicking, decreased tone, like he is constricted and can't loosen/move first inch and a half past his head. We noticed his water dish was dry. It may have been up to a day empty. Big oversight. We have been giving him tap water and I just read in our Corns in Captivity to offer filtered water only. He ate last 4 days ago. A frozen pinky. His viv is 8X16X10. His warm side has his hide and the heating mat. His cooler side has his water bowl, and a fake plant that he likes to hang in on occasion. The substrate is a mix of aspen and cedar. We also have a light above to keep the temps up. Warm side currently 86 degrees F, cooler 80 degrees. There are glass thermometers on floor of viv for measurement. We have been checking temps about 2-3 times a day. He has not shedded yet. His eyes are clear, breathing quiet but slower than usual. Skin and body smooth. Of course it is Saturday night in the states and no exotic vet to be found. |

Sorry to hear of your loss. Cedar should not be used as a substrate as it is toxic to snakes which MAY have caused his death. |

Oh so so sorry to hear that. Cedar could have been a contribution or he could have got dehydrated. I doubt it was using tap water. I use tap water for all my snakes although maybe tapwater is different in the states to over here. It could just have been one of those things with snakes, some are just not meant to make it.
Don't let it put you off keeping snakes tho and we are here to support and advise when you get your new addition. |
