Slightly odd I know... But I have a very old camera I want to replace but on a tight budget! I mostly take pictures of my pets, my son and occasional scenery.

Would love to get brilliant quality images like I see from some on here!

I've got an 8 year old, 7.1mp, Nikon. Some of the buttons don't work unless I twist the whole thing.

The other thing is knowing how to use the functions on the camera, and how they react to distance, image modes, etc. A lot of it is trial and error until you find the 'right' way to do it...

I use my sony phone camera or my Olympus one. I tend to set my cameras onto the sports settings when doing the snakes, chickens as they move so fats, only down side is that these pictures normally have to be done outdoors when its sunny.

A very special super, duper thanks for K :3

Canon and Nikon are industry leaders in photography, but if you just want a point and click one you'll get great spec out of something cheaper - Sony have nice features as well.

Too much is made of high megapixle cameras, don’t be fooled. Unless you’re really gearing up for poster-sized prints you simply don’t need anything more than a 6 to 8 megapixel camera. I have a 12 megapixel and my old Fuji was only 4 but be assured the quality of prints up to A4 is just as good.

one of the benefits of higher resolution is you can crop down without having to lose any quality

True, the more MP, the more you can crop, but you should never base a cameras quality on just the MP value. I would rather have a 2MP camera with a decent aperture, sensor size and lens than a 44MP camera without those. Let me try and explain...

I would make an assumption that a majority of the peoples on here that take the best pictures use DSLR's, because the sensors allow in more light, and the lenses are going to be way bigger than a mobile phone. Mobile phones for this reason will never replace DSLRs, but at the end of the day, it revolves around two factors. Cost and... cost :D

If you want really really good pics, you need a DSLR really, and you can get a fairly good entry level canon/Nikon/Sony for around £350/400. Up from there it gets pricier and better, but below that you're looking at point and shoots, which will never really achieve the affects I think you're after.

For good macro lenses by the way you're looking at around 150/200, but then they can go up to more value than the camera itself!!

I have to agree with that, I do a lot of underground photography where there is no light at all so have to rely on wide apertures, long exposures and light painting to get anything decent so I would choose something with manual controls any day. This also means I can get the exposure down to 1/1000 which gives a nice sharp photo of a snake that doesn't want to sit still :)
