Alright, might aswell start off with an introduction as this is my first post, I'm Dean, 19 from Scotland, UK. Me and my girlfriend bought our first snake last week from a local breeder. It's a Carolina Corn hatchling and it's gorgeous. Now I don't know if it's just me, or the snake just being nervous as it's getting used to it's environment but the snake really seems quite timid and defensive towards me when I go to pick it up out of the tank, always slithers away at some pace.. Yet when I eventually get it out, it's fine in my hands. Will it get used to me over time and be fine? Its usually alright with my girlfriend but I don't know what it's problem with me is, starting to make me worry, I haven't handled it since yesterday as we're going to try feeding it today. But yeah, back to the question - Will my snake become used to me and not try get away from me when I try to lift it out?
Thanks in advance. |

another scot! yaaaas! Howdy How old is the snake? What is your set up like?
In time the snake will get used to you. The general rule is to leave the snake alone for a week without handling to let it settle in.
What you can do is carry a sock with you for 24 hours and pop it into the housing. This will make sure the snake becomes more at home with your scent. It has worked for many members here including myself. |

It's normal for them to be nervous at first- they have just moved home afterall.
I think you'll find that as time goes on, he won't be as nervous but on the other hand I often find I am disturbing my snake- however eventually he gets use to you holding him and would rather explore than go back in his home.
The scent thing is very true- just yesterday a stranger came over (getting quotes for a new fitted wardrobe) and she wanted to see him- I got him out but he didn't want to know her at all and kept twisting his head underneath my hand! |

The snake is about 3-4weeks. This is the set-up, probably a bit big but I've blocked off a large portion as I got a 4ft viv for a really good price, too good to pass up, so I just blocked it off to this size.
And just leave a worn sock or just carry it like in my pocket? Leave that in the viv for a day to let it bask in my scent? :p |

Pretty basic set-up just now, just want it to get a bit bigger and settle in before I add more stuff in to the viv. |

Hi Dean, welcome along! Just carry a clean sock in your pocket and pop it in. Couldn't subject snakey to dirty feet socks lol. He'll get used to you eventually! Set up is probably a bit big but you did the right thing in dividing it. If he doesn't eat then you may want to look into getting him a smaller plastic tub to live in for a while until he's that bit bigger. Remember no handling for at least 24 hours after feeding :) |

Yeah I was thinking that haha, thanks for the welcome. As for the plastic tub, would I be better to put that in the viv or outside of the viv? And if it's to go outside the viv how would I go about heating etc? I know, I'm tempted to handle him just now but im not going to handle before feeding or after feeding and I'll be watching closely, if he does eat, to see if he regurges. Thanks for the replies. |

you can have it in side or outside the viv. i have my faun in side the viv with the heat mat on the floor of the viv and have 1/3 of the faun sat on top of the heat mat. |

i would go for the plastic tub. and the tape you have in the back is a big no no, if little snake gets stuck it can cause a lot of damage and stress them out. welcome along, you will learn loads from here, the people are amazing x |

Well I've made sure the tape is stuck down all the way from the roof of the viv to underneath the substrate. Snake didn't eat but there are signs of a shed I think, it's went dull with a blue tinge to the skin and since it's left the feeding tub it's been moving all around the tank rubbing its head and body along everything it's passing. |

Well how are we supposed to keep the wire secured so the snake cant climb up or to make it look more appealing than having a wire on show? |

You can get some trunking that you screw to the viv and it has a clip on lid. I used to install cables for a living so that is what I will use when I set up my big viv but I am sure others will have ideas.. |

there are threads in the diy section, or pin them back as if they are normal household wires and then get an ivy garland to cover. its not too much of a bothere if they climb up. x |

or use a cool glue gun to run a row of glue all the way down and thenn stick them on. it will come back off again. |

Does look better than the tape also. Alright Terry never fed last night but I think he may be shedding as he's been dipping in the waterbowl, rubbing his head and body along EVERYTHING and hes looking very dull. How long should I wait to feed after shedding? If he is due a shed. |

Depends on the snake, one of mine eats throughout and the other just eats on the monday after she sheds. Just offer on her normal feed day after she sheds, how long have you had her? Also she could feel un easy as she is in a big viv compared to her size. |
